Better than I remembered
Better than I expected, for late sixties fare. Roughly follows the history/legend of Alfred the Great. The sparse number of extras in some of the battle scenes, might cause you to channel your inner Monty Python. This is not to say they are cheesy, just not to scale. All things considered, I prefer this to CGI.
David Hemmings (the perennial sixties youthful dude) is an adequate Alfred. An unbelievably young Michael York, is convincing as the Viking antagonist. For fun, see if you can spot Ian McKellen.
While no "Man for all Seasons" or "Becket", this movie is worth a view. The subject is more than ripe for a remake. Maybe Hollywood could revisit this again, when they run out of comic book retreads.
