Product Information

This new edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), used by clinicians and researchers to diagnose and classify mental disorders, is the product of more than 10 years of effort by hundreds of international experts in all aspects of mental health. Their dedication and hard work have yielded an authoritative volume that defines and classifies mental disorders in order to improve diagnoses, treatment, and research. The criteria are concise and explicit, intended to facilitate an objective assessment of symptom presentations in a variety of clinical settings--inpatient, outpatient, partial hospital, consultation-liaison, clinical, private practice, and primary care. New features and enhancements make DSM-5 easier to use across all settings: * The chapter organization reflects a lifespan approach, with disorders typically diagnosed in childhood (such as neurodevelopmental disorders) at the beginning of the manual, and those more typical of older adults (such as neurocognitive disorders) placed at the end. Also included are age-related factors specific to diagnosis. * The latest findings in neuroimaging and genetics have been integrated into each disorder along with gender and cultural considerations.* The revised organizational structure recognizes symptoms that span multiple diagnostic categories, providing new clinical insight in diagnosis. * Specific criteria have been streamlined, consolidated, or clarified to be consistent with clinical practice (including the consolidation of autism disorder, Asperger's syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder into autism spectrum disorder; the streamlined classification of bipolar and depressive disorders; the restructuring of substance use disorders for consistency and clarity; and the enhanced specificity for major and mild neurocognitive disorders).* Dimensional assessments for research and validation of clinical results have been provided.* Both ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes are included for each disorder, and the organizational structure is consistent with the new ICD-11 in development. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, is the most comprehensive, current, and critical resource for clinical practice available to today's mental health clinicians and researchers of all orientations. The information contained in the manual is also valuable to other physicians and health professionals, including psychologists, counselors, nurses, and occupational and rehabilitation therapists, as well as social workers and forensic and legal specialists.

ReviewsDSM-5 has been underused and underappreciated as a source of commentary and context for the disorders whose boundaries it defines. In fact, there is much to admire in the content as well as the design of the volume. All too often trainees, busy clinicians, and educators alike skip hurriedly past its hundreds of pages of text to locate the boxed criterion sets that have come to be seen as the primary function of the manual. In doing so, they miss a rich set of clinical descriptions, conceptual frameworks, and related information regarding the disorders described. Treated not as a manual but as a textbook of clinical pathology, DSM-5 proves to be a thorough, authoritative, and respectably well-written addition to the genre.

  • A little wear due to moisture exposure - Not Brand New looking

Description said New, Like New or Slight wear due to moisture/water. Book was wrapped well and shipped in plenty of bubble wrap, but some moisture had gotten into wrapping. Outer cover had some peeling, and majority of pages were wavy/wrinkled due to getting wet or exposed to moisture. Otherwise all pages were legible and in tact. I'll be getting a lot of use from it. I was glad to find it for a decent price, compared to a brand new one from the bookstore, etc.

  • Comprehensive review

I purchased the hard cover. It was supposed to be new I believe. Shipping: poor. Was supposed to be delivered on a Monday. Got an update that it would be in on Tuesday. No other updates until it was confirmed delivered. It was delivered on Friday but I suspect late and I didn't pick it up until Saturday morning. Condition: not awesome. It got pretty beat up but it is all superficial and does not get in the way of reading the book. Quality: binding=poor, guts=good+ The binding is not all that hard or we'll put together. The cover bends and if I were to bend it on itself it would fold permanently. Think hard cardboard but not normal hard hard cover backing. The guts seem to be well done Accuracy: this I have not tested. I am busy at the moment but plan to compare it to am authentic digital copy of the DSM-5. This is the only part I truly care about so I will try to update my post after I check. As described?: mostly. The guts seem to be ok. The binding is poor and it was pretty beat up when I got it. Durable?: I suspect not based on the quality but I got this to care me through grad school and plan to buy a true DSM-6 when it is published. Other: I have highlighted a bit and have not experienced smudging. Also all all the pages seem to line up, not like a poor photo copy. I suspect they got a searchable pdf of the DSM and printed into books. No blank pages or sequence issues that I have seen. Conclusions and recommendations: the hard cover DSM is like 200 bucks. I am a poor grad student so I got this. It seems to be a perfectly acceptable substitute. If you are a professional just get a real one. The over all quality of materials in this one is poor, however if you need it for class or something short term this I think is a very good alternative. A DSM can be seen as an investment for your future, bit I suspect I will not need the 5 by the time I am able to practice so I got this one as my school copy to mark up. You get what you pay for.

  • Hardcover for 1/3 the price of others!

When I ordered this hardcover volume of the DSM-5, I was skeptical that I would receive "the real thing" at this excellent cost. However, the content, quality, and presentation of the text is everything a professional will need in the use of diagnostics and pertinent information that has been found in previous editions of the DIAGNOSTIC AND STATISTICAL MANUAL OF MENTAL DISORDERS - American Psychiatric Association - Fifth Edition.

  • Great Value

The hardcover version of the DSM-5 is a great choice since this is a very long text. This will be a helpful reference manual for years to come.

  • DSM-5 Hardcover

It helps you understand your illness. It helps me understand my symptoms better. Is always good to know more about your issue. Like I thought bipolar 1 and bipolar 2 is different you have to have one or the other, but after reading the book I seen this I have some of the symptoms of bipolar 2. It's must have if you're dealing with mental issues.

  • Irregular misprint and smells bad

The book smelled bad. Like old boxes and feces. Had to air the book out for a few days and put citronella oil on it to get most of the smell out. I think it was how the book was stored. Also the book was irregular. All the pages are there but the last few pages weren’t cut correctly and some weren’t cut at all. I had to take a scissor to them to separate the pages. They also weren’t glued into the spine at the top! Also, the book jacket was printed off kilter. The book I was sold was a misprint book. I payed over $50 for an irregular print book that smelled awful. Not pleased.

  • Disappointed in the cover

I was very disappointed when I got my DSM-V because in the product description it said it was a hardback but it turned out to be a soft cover. Beleaving it was a hard cover versus a soft cover made a big difference to me in deciding to purchase this one over another one.

  • Great Investment

My sister has wanted this item for such a long time. I was able to purchase it for a Christmas gift for her and she was in tears as she began to unveil this book! It is a "hardcover" book at an unbeatable price. This is a cherished item!
