Jaco dvd
This is a two disc dvd review that was released in late 2015 that was produced by Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and directed by Paul Marchand and Stephen Kijak. Disc one is the full length film with Dolby 5.1 surround design by Weather Report's Brian Risner. Disc two features extras, out takes, anecdotes and stories with more than 25 never-before-seen interviews. I was pleasantly happy after viewing this dvd release. The first disc is the real gem here and is worth the purchase alone. There has been much written about John Francis Pastorius lll over the years and we know all too well about his demise and the later part of his troubled life. The first disc is refreshing and sheds new light on Jaco's early life and development. This biopic contains incredible unseen footage and photography from the Pastorius family archive. In it the viewer gleans an even greater appreciation of this musical genius. From humble and innocent beginnings, thru adolescence into adulthood, marriage, fatherhood and finally his untimely death, this is the truest picture of completeness concerning Jaco ever offered to the public. I found everything about the first disc truly captivating. It's a journey thru Jaco's life from beginning to end but told and portrayed in a manner unlike ever presented. The second disc was a bit of a letdown but only because I would have liked to have seen more interviews from those who actually knew and worked with Jaco throughout his development, up to Weather Report and his solo efforts. However, don't let this dissuade you because there are some very revealing moments. I took from this a much better appreciation for the man and his music than I'd had before. If Jaco possessed the bipolar illness in his early life that consumed him later, it's certainly not portrayed that way. That stage of his life is portrayed from an empathetic perspective that is quite deeply moving. Jaco seemed to want nothing more than to be the consummate sideman in his musical odyssey. I once took drum lessons from a drummer that spent a small window of time with Jaco in the C C Riders. He said Jaco never drank, smoked or partied in those days and sent most all of his earnings home to Tracy. Jaco would practice in the bathroom of the tour bus in the early morning hours while everyone was asleep. He would wedge his bass between the walls of the bathroom for resonance and have at it. Though the history & timeline are supremely truncated, and one might find him or herself desiring for more truth delved into the latter half of his career, watching this film gives you an inkling of an idea into the mind & life of one of the finest musicians to ever grace the earth. A true story of heart & triumph, depression & loss, "Jaco" brings the vitality & beauty of jazz music to a myriad of ears previously unwilling to listen. Through countless, candid interviews with people who had the pleasure of his company, you will find yourself immersed in the love of music, the passion of poise, the unforgettable contribution of the greatest bass player to ever hold the young instrument. At a time when no one had thought of the electric bass as a viable option, he made it his own, and likewise, YOU... should make this documentary YOUR own.

Jaco-mania!
A great documentary/ overview of the life & career of jaco pastorius. Robert Trujillo & Mr Paul Marchand did an excellent job complete w interviews w friends & family, performance clips, a labor of love & respect, & it shows in the end product. The version I got was 2 disc- disc 2 was an hr plus of extended interviews/ anecdotes not in the main. Well worth price of admission. Would've liked to have seen more performance clips- perhaps Mr Trujillo & Mr Marchand could w the family gather a DVD s worth of such,w closeups & clear sound to get the full jaco experience. Guaranteed I'd be the 6th person in line to buy a copy or 2. On that note,will have to purchase another set soon, as this disc occupies my DVD player thru the weekends. And we're talking the last month 1/2 since arriving. Need I say more. A suggestion? Find it- buy it, you won't be dissatisfied. And send Mr Trujillo a thank you for his great efforts. Rcwolfe 09

They did a good job on this. Sort of a must have for bass players and good for everyone else to appreciate a gifted human being and a troubled one.
