SynopsisSally Sexton Kalmbach has produced a well-researched story about Bertha Honore Palmer who ruled Chicago society from the time of her marriage to the very successful Potter Palmer in 1870 to her death in 1918. The book contains over 50 photographs of the mansions built in the Gold Coast, which was developed by Potter Palmer, including the Palmer "Castle" and items from the Palmer scrapbooks seen here for the first time. Mrs. Palmer's influence on Chicago is still a topic of conversation. She was Chicago's "Queen" and ruled effectively as Chairman of the Board of Lady Managers of the Columbian Exposition in 1893. She also guided the Art Institute of Chicago to develop its outstanding collection of Impressionist paintings, built around Mrs. Potter's donations from her own collection. As "The Jewel" explains, she was indeed a legend in her own time.
