SynopsisStrike from the Sea: U.S. Navy Attack Aircraft from Skyraider to Super Hornet 1948-Present celebrates carrier-based air-to-ground attack aircraft, which first came into operation during the Korean War, reached maturity during Vietnam, and are now deployed throughout the world. Well-known author and naval aviation authority Tommy Thomason not only explores such legendary Navy aircraft as the A4D Skyhawk, A3J Vigilante, and A-6 Intruder, the critical role of the aircraft carrier as well as itself, for without these massive nuclear-powered floating airfields, U.S. Navy attack aircraft would have no sea-borne bases from which to operate. Armament from gravity bombs to today's GPS-guided "smart weapons" are covered in great detail, and this book also explains that while many different types of airplanes were required for flying attack missions in the past, only one aircraft - the advanced F/A-18E/F Super Hornet - is needed to carry out these same missions in an even more complex and hostile combat environment today., Author Thomason not only explores such legendary Navy aircraft as the A4D Skyhawk, A3J Vigilante, and A-6 Intruder, but also the critical role of the aircraft carrier itself.

Awesome book! Well-researched text and excellent illustrations help tell the story of US Navy attack aircraft from just after WW2 to today's stealthy F-35's.

  • A comprehensive synopsis of the US Navy attack aircraft since 1945

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in US naval combat aviation since 1945 because it tells of the history of development of attack aircraft developed for the US Navy following the end of the World War II, from the piston-engine Skyraider to carrier-based strategic bombers to the A-7 Corsair II to the Super Hornet to the Joint Strike Fighter program. One surprising thing about this book is that in Chapter 1, there is a passage discussing the explosive-packed aircraft developed by the Naval Aircraft Factory and Interstate given that those machines could be regarded as primitive UCAVs. Chapters 11 and 12 of this book tell a comprehensive narrative of the US Navy's efforts at shopping for an A-6 and F-14 replacement, including the cancelled A-12 Avenger II naval stealth bomber program, NATF program for a carrier-based stealth fighter, and the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, and special mention is made of Lockheed's unrealized proposals for a navalized F-117 in the 1990s.
