In 'The Beiderbecke Affair' Trevor and Jill are school teachers who enter a complex world of mysterious intrigue. 'The Beiderbecke Connection' tells of more unlikely adventures of the two schoolteachers. 'The Beiderbecke Tapes' is another story of Trevor Chaplin and Jill Swinborne who enter a world of adventure as Trevor is offered some jazz tapes from the barman at his local pub. One of the tapes contains some alarming information and when they return to challenge the barman they find he has disappeared.

Funny
Alan Plater's Beiderbecke Trilogy is one of my favourite programmes of all time, his writing is sharp, clever, and witty. Marry that with great comic actors like James Bolam, Barbara Flynn, and Terence Rigby amongst others, then you've got yourself a gem. Jill & Trevor are teachers in a Leeds school(the original Educating Yorkshire) who quite innocently get themselves mixed up in criminal activity. A running theme throughout the series is Trevor's love for jazz, which proves quite poignant at the very end of the final series, The Beiderbecke Connection. I just absolutely love.

Entertaining, enjoyable and good value but sound quality occasionally inadequate
Enjoyable, quirky and subtle comedy mystery set against a background of 1980s Yorkshire. Lots of interesting and eccentric but well-acted and (mostly) believable characters within slightly surreal and somewhat unlikely storylines with excellent music backdrop. Only drawback (noted in other online reviews also) is that sound quality on this DVD issue occasionally makes quiet speech hard to understand (doesn't affect the main dialogue, only the more subtle throwaway comments between the two main characters). The enjoyable theme tune and incidental music come across fine, I'm pleased to say. Summary: content good and quirky, reproduction satisfactory but not ideal.

GREAT comedy!
Unlike a lot of period comedy, this series has withstood the test of time. The dialogue is laugh-a-minute as one would expect from a playwright of Alan Plater's calibre. The music is a delight and the fact that the plots are a bit thin doesn't matter - it's ALL about the interaction between the characters.

Local to Leeds, gentle comedy
coming from Leeds, one of the many positive aspects of this series is playing spot the place as much of the filming was done in and around Leeds. The comedy is gentle and very funny

Gentle comedy with great characters.
Really great show. Very funny, quite offbeat and great characters. Highly entertaining and well constructed. I recommend this to anyone who likes gentle comedy.
