Product Information
John Huston's classic film adaptation of the 1895 novel by Stephen Crane about a young man's first experience in war. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War the film ponders the feelings of anxiety and finally outright fear in a boy preparing for battle. Henry (Audie Murphy) loses his illusions of heroism during his first skirmish, and just prior to engaging the enemy for the second time, he deserts the field of combat and enters an idyllic world of the forest. I felt the film followed the book rather well.
This film was quite difficult for me to watch. It is not an easy thing, watching someone that one knows to be brave acting a coward. I believe that Murphy did a very good job playing the part. One of my all time favorite movies. The characters truly portray the simple ways and lack of sophistication of those times and the complexities of the common men who are swept up in war's madness.
