Band of Brothers producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg re-team to produce this ten-hour World War II miniseries based on the books 'With the Old Breed' by Eugene Sledge and 'Helmet for My Pillow' by Robert Leckie. The series details the arduous odysseys of U.S. Marines, Sledge, Leckie, and John Basilone from their first skirmishes in Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and across the perilous sands of Iwo Jima, to their eventual return to American soil following V-J Day. Additional interviews conducted by the filmmakers in collaboration with Hugh Ambrose (son of late Band of Brothers author Stephen E. Ambrose.

Not Gung - Ho , simply a masterpiece from the actors, producer and director. A must have for fans of the genre,
As new , remarkable and authentic production describing the hard fought Pacific war that our allies fought and won. An illustration of why dictators never succeed and a true lesson in life. Superb acting and direction throughout , a little gory in places for some perhaps , but this was exactly as it occurred and it is directed with no punches held back. The human story included is superb without the silly gung -ho indulgences of the common American over patriotic movies. High-budget tv series about US marines fighting the island battles of the Pacific campaign, 1942-45
This is a high budget tv series about the island battles of the Pacific campaign 1942-45, and should be compared to the earlier Band of Brothers, which covered the European campaign 1944-5. Again, we follow the fortunes of a single elite company --- this time, marines. However, the emphasis is now on the leadership and fighting skills of the sergeants & corporals, rather than the officers. In Band of Brothers, veteran soldiers became closer to one another, the company proved their elite status, and enjoyed the fruits of victory. Major Winters was visibly ennobled by the war. The Pacific is very different. The marines continually fight for island after island, taking 35% casualties in many battles against an enemy who will not surrender, even when clearly beaten. They fight heat, damp, ... This is a high budget tv series about the island battles of the Pacific campaign 1942-45, and should be compared to the earlier Band of Brothers, which covered the European campaign 1944-5. Again, we follow the fortunes of a single elite company --- this time, marines. However, the emphasis is now on the leadership and fighting skills of the sergeants & corporals, rather than the officers. In Band of Brothers, veteran soldiers became closer to one another, the company proved their elite status, and enjoyed the fruits of victory. Major Winters was visibly ennobled by the war. The Pacific is very different. The marines continually fight for island after island, taking 35% casualties in many battles against an enemy who will not surrender, even when clearly beaten. They fight heat, damp, sores, wildlife, and lack of clean water. Although they win every battle, ultimate victory in the war comes only from the A-bomb. This supremely attritional campaign wears the marines down, physically, mentally, & morally. Some end up in a mental ward. Replacements are ignored or mercilessly teased by veterans, who believe that rookie mistakes will quickly get them killed. Even the veterans end up hating each other. Finally, on Okinawa, the tactics of the Japanese force the marines to throw away the Geneva Convention, and they start to shoot unarmed soldiers, and even civilians. Despite this bleak vision of war, the series benefits from excellent computer graphics, which aid the large scale action, especially in the amphibious landings. The different climates of Guadalcanal, Peleliu, and Okinawa are also realistically portrayed. The acting is not of the calibre of Band of Brothers, and characterisation is weaker. Overall, though, this series is educational with high production values, and worth a watch. 6/10

This 10-part miniseries is a truly riveting watch following the stories of three Marines fighting in the Pacific during World War II. It is thought provoking, visceral at times, and focuses on the bonds formed between the Marines during tragic and horrifying times. Unlike its precursor, Band of Brothers, The Pacific focuses on the journey before, during, and after the war, documenting the lasting effects of trauma on each individual man. Notably, my favourite character, Eugene Sledge, enters the war as a naive sheltered boy and, during his time as a Marine, slowly falls from grace and begins to lose his humanity; the noticeable change from innocence to hardened resignation is a truly harrowing thing to watch and performed so beautifully on screen. I would recommend this series to anyone ... This 10-part miniseries is a truly riveting watch following the stories of three Marines fighting in the Pacific during World War II. A fantastic show with inspiring acting, stunning cinematography, and three incredibly well-written and entwined stories weaving throughout one of the most horrendous events in history.

A very good HBO Movie combining action and relationships between soldiers and each other plus, although the Australians were in the Pacific war, Americans were top dog. Nothing new eh?

Wow felt like I was there
This is by far the best mini series you can buy. Band of brothers is also good but this is just amazing after reading the books off two of the men in this I decided to by the dvd it's just amazing full of everything a good war film needs would highly recommend.
