GATTACA:- A FIILM ABOUT DNA RE-ENGINEERING IN THE NEAR DISTANT FUTURE.
AS ETHAN HAWKE, THE MAIN LEAD ACTOR, PUT IT IN THE MAKING OF THE FILM TEN YEARS LATER IN 2007, THE FILM WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME. ETHAN HAWKE, JUDE LAW, UMA THURMAN, ALAN ARKIN, GORE VIDAL AND LOREN DEAN ARE SOME OF THE SUPERB CASTS THAT MADE THIS FILM SUCCESSFUL, ALBEIT ITS BUDGETARY CONSTRAINTS. THE SETTING FOR THE FILM IS NEAR DISTANT FUTURE WITH ADVANCEMENT IN DNA ENGINEERING, WITH RETRO CARS HAVING THE SOUND OF AN ELECTRIC ENGINE, AND WHERE THERE WAS A DISCRIMINATION BETWEEN VALID AND INVALID. IN-VALIDS ARE THOSE BORN GENETICALLY UNALTERED WITH EVERY HUMAN BEING'S SHORTCOMINGS; OR AS UMA THURMAN LATER PUT IT IN THE LATER FILM WHEN VINCENT WAS BEING DISCOVERED BY IRENE (UMA THURMAN) AS BEING IN -VALID - "GOD CHILD". VINCENT (ETHAN HAWKE) HAD A HEART CONDITION WHICH PREVENTED HIM FROM GOING TO SPACE. HIS FATHER, ON SEEING THAT HE WAS UNABLE TO GET OVER THIS OBSESSION, SUGGESTED THAT HE WORKED AS A CLEANER AT GATTACA AEROSPACE. HOWEVER, HIS CHANCE CAME AFTER MUCH SEARCHING FOR A "BORROWED LADDER ", WHEELCHAIRED JEROME MORROW (JUDE LAW), WHO, UPON A FEE, WAS WILLING TO LEND VINCENT THE NECESSARY BODILY TOOLS, WHICH INCLUDED HIS BLOOD AND URINE SAMPLES, FOR HIS AMBITION. HE HAD A YOUNGER BROTHER, ANTON (LOREN DEAN) AND, DESPITE HIS GENETICAL ENGINEERING DURING CHILD BIRTH, WAS BEATEN MANY TIMES BY VINCENT SINCE THEIR CHILDHOOD IN THE SWIMMING DUEL AT SEA. VINCENT MASTERED THE OLD EDITION, "CELESTIAL NAVIGATION " AND, WITH THE HELP OF THE "BORROWED LADDER", RISED HIMSELF QUICKLY UP TO THE RANK OF A FIRST CLASS NAVIGATOR UNDER THE DISGUISE OF JEROME MORROW. THERE HE MET HIS LOVE INTEREST, A SEXY STUNNING CO-WORKER, IRENE( UMA THURMAN), WHO, DESPITE HER OWN HEART CONDITION LIKE THAT OF VINCENT, WAS OBSESSED WITH A PERFECT GENETIC CODE, OF ALL THINGS BEING PERFECT. IRENE WAS ATTRACTED TO VINCENT, AND BOTH HAD EXCELLENT SEXUAL CHEMISTRY. SINCE THE FORMER MISSION DIRECTOR OF GATTACA AEROSPACE WAS MURDERED, VINCENT WAS NEARLY IMPLICATED IF NOT FOR THE SUBTLE INTERVENTION (OR PERHAPS DEFENDING HIM FROM DETECTIVE HUGO) OF HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, ANTON, SOMEHOW, AT THE SAME TIME IMPLICITLY KNOWING THAT THE IN-VALID COULD BE HIS ELDER BROTHER. CERTAINLY, VINCENT FEARED BEING DISCOVERED FOR BEING AN INVALID WHEN HE WAS TOLD BY IRENE THAT THE INVESTIGATORS HAD FOUND HIS EYE LASH IN THE SOUTH WING. BUT JEROME MORROW (JUDE LAW) RESTORED HIS CONFIDENCE BY SAYING THAT THEY OR THE INVESTIGATORS WOULD NOT RECOGNISE HIM COMPLETELY, AND THAT WHAT THEY SAW WAS THE REAL JEROME MORROW. HOWEVER, JEROME MORROW, (JUDE LAW) REPRIMANDED HIM FOR BEING SO CARELESS. HOWEVER, DESPITE THE INTERNAL CONFLICT BETWEEN THE TWO BROTHERS, ANTON WAS SURPRISED AND, AT THE SAME INSTANT, RELIEVED TO KNOW THAT VINCENT WAS NOT THE SUSPECT WHEN THE PRESENT DIRECTOR (GORE VIDAL) GAVE HIMSELF UP TO THE POLICE DETECTIVE HUGO (ALAN ARKIN). AS USUAL, SINCE THE BROTHERS MET THE FIRST TIME SINCE VINCENT WORKED AT GATTACA, HE CHALLENGED ANTON TO ANOTHER SWIMMING DUEL, WHICH VINCENT EMERGED ONCE AGAIN AS THE VICTOR. RELEASED BY COLUMBIA, NOW SONY PICTURES, IT HAS AN INTERESTING PLOT WITH SUSPENSE ON WHO THE MURDERER WAS. THE FILM, WHICH I ALSO HAVE IN DVD, WAS EXCELLENTLY MASTERED IN QUALITY, AND CERTAINLY LOOKS MUCH BETTER IN BLU RAY. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. THE SPECIAL FEATURES HAVE A DOCUMENTARY ON GENETIC (DNA) ENGINEERING BY EXPERTS.
