The British television series THE AVENGERS ran from 1961 to 1969. It featured a stylish detective duo investigating bizarre crimes in hour-long mystery/adventure dramas. It also inspired the 1998 Hollywood film THE AVENGERS starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman. The original duo of anthropologist, marksman, and judo expert Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman) and undercover operative/man-about-town John Steed (Patrick Macnee) is on the case in seven complete episodes from the '63 season. Episodes include:"Second Sight" - Steed helps transport some camera equipment from Switzerland to London, but gets more than he bargained for when he discovers he's been duped into importing some stolen jewels."The Medicine Men" - Cathy and Steed uncover a devious plot involving the manufacture of illegal drugs to help cure stomach pains. "The Grandeur That Was Rome" - An outbreak of disease all over Europe leads the fearless Avengers to Rome, where they encounter a megalomaniac drug overlord who fancies himself as a modern-day Caesar. "The Golden Fleece" - An evasive Chinese gold smuggler is finally tracked down by Steed and Cathy, but bringing him to justice proves more problematic than expected. "Don't Look Behind You" - Cathy finds herself all alone in a house full of medieval attire, but soon realizes she is being watched, leading to a heady dose of paranoia and mysterious happenings."Death A La Carte" - A wealthy businessman winds up dead, and his staff are the prime suspects. Steed and Cathy go undercover to find the cause of death, leading to a puzzling case for the dashing duo."Dressed To Kill" - Steed attempts to buy property near England's only remaining functional defense radar, but he soon finds rivals for the house, and some mysterious deaths on his hands.

    Avengers

    It's critical that you do watch these early episodes as they lay the frame work for later collections. You'll notice how the series evolves and actors are recycled as time goes on which isn't bad but different from American programs. The writing is vastly different than later series so be aware. The sound isn't great but for what the had to work with its fine. Any chance to see a woman in leather kicking butt and taking names bond style is an A+ in my book.

    Great to Meet Cathy Gayle!

    The Avengers with Cathy Gayle (before the introduction of Mrs. Emma Peel) is a great show. Considering the DVDs are produced from films sixty years old, the picture quality is good. The beauty, style, and grace of Honor Blackman adds much to the videos. John Steed too is in top form. A gentleman who went through more than one beautiful assistant to stop the nefarious deeds of criminals is also impressive. The bottom line is this for me was a great purchase and I would highly recommend this video.

    Fun!

    These episodes provide insight into the later series that was eventually broadcast in the US. Good stories but much lower production values. However, still worth it for a more comprehensive look at the entire Avengers saga.
