A Nearly Perfect Christmas Album
Why nearly perfect?
Let's start with the great: Nowhere was Karen Carpenter's beautiful, otherworldly vocal talent more at home than when she sang traditional Christmas songs and carols, and she delivered 100% on this album. Her performances rank with the best singers who ever sang Christmas songs, and she was the only singer of her generation to ever reach that level.
The not-so-great: The less Richard Carpenter, the closer to perfect this album would have been. I don't know whether or not his presence on the album was a function of Karen (or someone) wanting to give him equal time or his own need for ego gratification, but it's clear that his talent never came close to that of his gifted sister. Had this been an album purley consisting of Karen singing these songs, it would merit five stars in my book.
