    Compelling reading that stands up to a yearly revisit.

    This and Caleb Carr’s The Alienist are go to mystery/detective novels with fascinating characters, a strong sense of its historical period — New York in the late 1890’s — and plots that are complex and adult in their subject matter of serial killers and their victims.
