Product Information

Delbert Mann's big-screen remake of Paddy Chayefsky's 1953 teleplay, one of the most successful works of film's Golden Age, stars Ernest Borgnine as Bronx butcher, Marty Piletti. A good-natured man, if plain and overweight, the 34-year-old bachelor has become fed up with the dreariness of life with vacant, dead-end friends like Angie (Joe Mantell), omnipresent relatives like his cousin Tommy (Jerry Paris), and his nagging mother, Theresa (Esther Minciotti), with whom he shares a house. Often rejected by women, he feels that he is too unattractive to marry, and is far from eager to endure further humiliation. Still, Marty finds himself at a local dance hall, where he angrily refuses a man who offers him a few bucks to take home a blind date who has turned out to be a dog. The butcher seeks out the humiliated woman, Clara (Betsy Blair), who's in tears, and after he comforts her, they return to the dance. As Marty confesses similar experiences of his own to Clara, he realizes that he may have found the woman he's been looking for. Influenced by neo-realist masterpieces like UMBERTO D, Chayefsky's poignant, brilliantly observed kitchen-sink drama remains as persuasive as ever, as it explores the universal need to give and receive love.

    Marty is a lovable character that is definitely shy and uncomfortable around woman but falls in love with one.

    The case itself is in great shape and the disc and cover art are in excellent shape to. The plastic on the outside of the case though has a cut mark and an indent that looks like another cut mark. This is a good movie but I thought it was in color based off the cover picture but it's in black and white. Still a good movie though.

    Love Will Find a Way!

    Marty was a small movie based on a television play (Marty was played there by Rod Steiger). Ernest Borgnine is terrific as a butcher's assistant who is nagged by his mother and friends about getting married. He tells his mother he wants to get married but he is not good looking and women just don't give him a glance. He decides one Saturday night on his married brother's advice to go to a ballroom to meet someone. His brother has problems with his mother-in-law who lives with him, his wife and new baby. There Marty meets a "spinsterish" woman who is dumped by the guy who took her to the dance. As they get to know each other, love blossoms as they see beyond their physical appearances and into their hearts. This movie is a Classic!

    Marty for President !!

    I understand the Movie won an Oscar or was nominated for one. I am from The Bronx, N.Y. This story is based out of the early years of The Bronx, N.Y. Marty and Angie were hilarious. the Co-Stars were all Excellent, Great Movie, Great, great Movie. Thank You !!

    A example of great acting showing the talent of Ernest Borgnine being cast against type. A guy that's believes he's ugly and is lonely because of that belief, and a nice guy that could be intimidating because of his size.
