Synopsis
This introduction to fundamental ideas in classical probability is written for an audience ranging from mathematical amateurs to scientists, from students to professional mathematicians. Includes illustrative problems, with answers at the end of the book., The ideas of probability are all around us. Lotteries, casino gambling, the al most non-stop polling which seems to mold public policy more and more these are a few of the areas where principles of probability impinge in a direct way on the lives and fortunes of the general public. At a more re moved level there is modern science which uses probability and its offshoots like statistics and the theory of random processes to build mathematical descriptions of the real world. In fact, twentieth-century physics, in embrac ing quantum mechanics, has a world view that is at its core probabilistic in nature, contrary to the deterministic one of classical physics. In addition to all this muscular evidence of the importance of probability ideas it should also be said that probability can be lots of fun. It is a subject where you can start thinking about amusing, interesting, and often difficult problems with very little mathematical background. In this book, I wanted to introduce a reader with at least a fairly decent mathematical background in elementary algebra to this world of probabil ity, to the way of thinking typical of probability, and the kinds of problems to which probability can be applied. I have used examples from a wide variety of fields to motivate the discussion of concepts., The purpose of this book is to introduce the basic notions of probability through the discussion of a variety of problems and applications. The most important feature is the attempt to explain fundamental ideas in classical probability to non-specialists whose only prerequisite is algebra. The book can be used as a text for a first course in probability. Each chapter ends with a few problems with answers at the end of the book., The ideas of probability are all around us. - d***m (92)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufHighly recommend this seller. Excellent communication (and i asked a lot of questions). Great price and the watch was described 100% correctly. The watch was near perfect condition with box and papers included. Pictures in the listing were accurate. Very happy with the purchase.
- r***y (282)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letztes JahrBestätigter KaufOrdered because of non-stock photo and described condition, received a book with a huge "RENT ME" sticker that wraps around the front and spine. Clearly not the book in the listing or even similar, classic bait and switch. Aside from that, the book was probably in better shape before it got shipped. It was packaged only in plastic, no bubble, no cardboard. The corners of the hardcover are all smashed. Now I get to take a hair dryer and try to remove the sticker and own a tumbled looking bookA Friendly Introduction to Number Theory. 3rd edition. Joseph Silverman (Nr. 256593646615)
