SOLARIS, director Andrei Tarkovsky's science fiction cult classic, presents an uncompromisingly unique and poetic meditation on space travel and its physical and existential ramifications. When a long-standing Russian space station hovering above the planet Solaris begins to report strange phenomena, Kris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis), an eager and intrepid cosmonaut, departs for the station in order to investigate. Warned by former Solaris specialists that the planet presents incomprehensible obstacles, Kelvin is nevertheless secure in his mission. However, the minute he steps foot onto the haunted and desolate space station, everything changes. Kelvin learns that of the three members left on board, one has killed himself and the remaining two have seemingly become schizophrenic recluses. When Kelvin's dead ex-wife appears out of the shadows, the reports that Solaris is a thinking being capable of reading human minds and materializing their desires and memories are proven true. As Kelvin joins the rest of the crew in a seemingly life-or-death struggle to understand this phenomena, Tarkovsky crafts a mind-altering earthbound space odyssey. Filled with visions of humanity versus itself, SOLARIS takes the philosophical investigations of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY to extravagant lengths and offers no answers except this: The only frontier humanity has yet to conquer is that of its own existence.

Product as described, brand new, well packed, but it took ages to get the parcel and there was no information from the seller about delay and no tracking, so I was confused why it takes so long. Product purchased on 29th of January and while estimated delivery was between Mon, 03 Feb - Sat, 08 Feb, I received this parcel on 21 Feb. There's room for improvement.

A fascinating Film. Well worth a watch.
I was recommended this DVD by a friend and have found it an interesting film. I can't say I fully understood all of what it was trying to tell me though. Particularly as it strayed into Russian dialogue on one or two occasions. Most of the film was dubbed into English but not all and I feel I lost some understanding as a result. But the filming was excellent. Don't try the American version as it will just be American. And watch the interview with the Female Star, fascinating.I was recommended this DVD by a friend and have found it an interesting film. Dated - but still worth watching.
The production values of this 1972 film do not compare well with the Soderbergh/ Clooney 2002 version (of course) with it's greater sense of mystery and epic soundtrack etc. However, this film is still well worth watching as it captures elements of the book that are not captured by the 2002 version - the fear element is better captured, and the time involved in studying this enigmatic planet (multiple human generations) with agonisingly slow progress. My advice, read the book and watch both film versions for the best understanding of the story. Personally I would like to see another re-make that tries to capture the best elements of all three (e.g the human wonder at the gigantic 'liquid computers' of impossible complexity on the planet surface and the human wonderment at them is simply ... A classic early 1970's Science fiction film, in the light of 2001 a Space Odyssey.
This movie is a very unusual film, mainly because of the way in which it is built up. Solaris is a film for the thinking person, it has little in the way of action, but much more in the way of content. The scenes are convincing and typically 70's, the sets are just right, not over the top, but believable. As we are bombarded with modern movies with many CGI effects, this film is from a time when special effects are minimal, but the film is all the better for that. It is a great film, but you do need to be in the right frame of mind to view it.This movie is a very unusual film, mainly because of the way in which it is built up. Solaris is a film for the thinking person, it has little in the way of action, but much more in the way of content. The scenes are convincing and typically 70's, the sets are just right, not over the top, but believable. As we are bombarded with modern movies with many CGI effects, this film is from a time when special effects are minimal, but the film is all the better for that. It is a great film, but you do need to be in the right frame of mind to view it.
