When 15-year-old science genius Mitch Taylor (Gabe Jarrett) is recruited by the pompous Professor Hathaway (William Atherton) to be part of a special research team, he has no idea he will be working on a top secret military weapon. Enrolling at Pacific Tech College, he meets his fellow whiz kid classmates, including infamous senior Chris Knight (Val Kilmer), whose intelligence and irreverent behavior are legendary; they become roommates, despite their different approaches to life. Smart, good-natured and truly fun
This may sound nuts, but I can say from my own youth experience is that, if you want to really party, engineers are the guys to seek out. It's true! Real Genius does a pretty terrific job of capturing the spirit of the eccentric science nerd culture that existed in many places durng the 80s.(Coding camps, sci-fi conventions ...) It's humor is gentle, smart and good-natured. It's a nostalgic romp through the colorful 80s as told through a fictional college campus. Lightweight but fun movie.
Real Genius (1985) is fun comedy. Check out the movie review sites for a full rundown, but it's the story of some very smart engineering students who are working to boost the output of a laser. See genuius students party, mature and create new worlds.
Life in Pasadena, California is accurately portrayed in funny, entertaining romp about the life and times at the foremost science university in the world. These genius students are the developers of the rocket fuel we use to explore outer space and have developed the Mars Rovers. Naturally, they are not average nor are they "normal" kids. Genius applies to each student and the professors are usually Nobel prize recipients. Real Genius with Val Kilmer
