Having the remote makes using the SoundDock more convenient. I can start, stop change songs and increase or decrease volume remotely. I also found a Bluetooth device to plug into the SoundDock to use it to play iTunes from my phone. My original iPod still works, however is not as user friendly as using the Bluetooth and updated iTunes from my phone.
