Wilderness and wildlife at their very best
This is the full collection of all the Bush Tucker Man programmes every made - the original eight series 1 episodes from 1988, the seven series 2 episodes filmed in 1990/1, plus the eight "stories of survival" episodes from 1994. There is, I believe, one other programme - not included in this DVD set - that exists, filmed around 1986, that was the pre-cursor to what became the Bush Tucker Man series. This very first appearance of Hiddins on TV outlined his role within the Australian army as a bush survival researcher. Despite this omission the DVD set represents good value for money (there are 5 DVDs in the box). If you enjoy the outdoors, nature and wildlife then this set of programmes is a must-see. Les Hiddins (who now, in 2017, is 71!) roams across Australia in his trusty Landrover and trailer as if he's just popping down the local supermarket. Visiting many of the great wilderness areas of that country, and in his own inimitable fashion, Hiddins kind-of transports you there with him. The scenery is stunning and the concept of being truly alone in the wilderness is captivating. It takes you back to a time before the internet and on-demand communication and is brilliant escapism for those of us who have no access to such wide open spaces and the chance to get away from the over-crowded madness of modern life. Outdoor and remote Australia at its best
For anybody who remembers Les Hiddins and the Bush Tucker Man series, this is a great ride down memory lane. Surprisingly, it still holds up well as entertainment, even though it was mostly shot on analogue cameras (or perhaps 16mm film) and is in 4:3 format. A lot of it was shot in the 1980s. For us, it has added value, since many of the places he visits are places where we have visited by 4WD over the years. Recommended for anybody who loves outdoors Australia. I really missed this series so I was thrilled when this domestic series became available to purchase as a complete set. Fantastic work by the one and only Bush Tucker Man, Major Les Hiddens. Love it!
I loved this when it was on the TV years ago, and it is still as good to watch now. Les relates some fascinating, sometimes tragic, tales of early exploration into the outback, in a way that leaves you wanting to know more.
