Entertaining 1978 Adaptation of a 1960s British Bestseller
I really enjoyed the novel "A Horseman Riding By", so I looked forward to watching the adaptation. Of course, reducing a 1000+ page novel to 13 TV episodes means some deletions are inevitable. The action begins after the 1900 Boer War but cuts off at the end of WW I rather than the outbreak of WW II. Even so, many events and characters are omitted, leaving the pace a bit rushed to me. Since I am a fan of these 1960s-70s-80s British series, I nevertheless enjoyed this period drama, just not as much as "Upstairs Downstairs" or "The Pallisars". You might want to try this series if you liked either of those.

One of my favorite movie series
I loved the characters in this movie-very engaging story of an English country squire and his life and loves and his very interesting tenants. This series is one of my new favorites in my movie collection-so glad I ordered it!

Don’t buy this unless you like little character development.
Wow. A complete rewrite. Read the books. More time spent on props then acting. Discs in great shape. View it once and if you have any friends who listen to npr give it to them.

good series, acting, writing
A very attractive and engaging miniseries from the late 70's, starring a stunningly handsome young Nigel Havers. It was, perhaps, his first big appearance on screen. He plays a young officer returning from war who buys a faltering estate. The series deals primarily with his new approach to being squire of the land, and how he deals with his tenant farmers and locals differs strongly from the 'old guard' squire down the road. Old vs New. He deals with tragedies, his own and that of his friends and workers. He is always learning, and applies the best of his knowledge -- tempered by his good heart -- to all his decisions. It is funny how, in this series as well as others of the period, the aging of a young actor is always represented by the adding of a mustache to his costume. Colors are typically 'earth tones', so characteristic of TV of the period, but this is a series worth watching. And, certainly, the young Nigel Havers remains one of the most beautiful of all English actors.

Locations are the key to an historical drama and this one was outstanding.
The restoration of the series is outstanding. My family and I enjoyed the dramatization of the novel and the locations chosen - it seemed as if the viewer was within the period of 1902. I would recommend the DVD to anyone interested in the recreation of the Edwardian Period in British history. A kind of "upstairs - downstairs" series. I knew I would like it when I saw the opening scene of the steam train pulling into the country station!

England in the 1900's ... these times are a'changin !
Interesting story of a man who comes and buys a big estate... rich neighbors have typical English attitudes about class but he seems above that... nice easy series to wait

Another BBC Classic
This a a very good production of a R.F. Delderfield book. If you have ever read "God is an Englishman", "Thei's was the Kingdom" or any other of his historical books, you will surely enjoy this series. If you haven't read any Delderfield book, you ought to!!!!

A Horseman Riding By is a period drama with great acting. Get it if you like British period dramas.
I always wanted to see this program and am happy I ordered it.
