Book Review: 81 Days Below Zero
This book was a used book. It was in such excellent condition it was hard to tell that it had been read. I received the book even before the date it was promised by. It was a great story of survival against unbelievable odds, and it kept me coming back to read. I felt that I knew the main character through reading this book. Lots of nuggets of Alaskan history and WW2 history as well.
Its been a long time since I've read a book that I did not want to put down. Reading this book is like stepping back into time, The early 40's when the war is raging. The book doesn't waste much time getting to the crash but I would say only about 20 percent of the book is about the actual survival story of Leon Crane, the remaining 80 percent of the book brings together many stories and much history of the people in the area's described in the book. The history of the gold rush, the history of the founders of Fairbanks and the then operations of funneling war planes to the Russians through Ladd field now know as Eielson air force base, I learned a lot of things I didn't know about the war fought on the Aleutians against the invading Japanese army. The areas where the story takes place is a huge track of land between Fairbanks, Delta and the Charley river where the crash takes place. A lot of history of these areas and the people who lived there is found in this book along with the stories of a lot of the early bush pilots who serviced these remote places. I finished the book in two settings without coming up for as much as a cup of coffee. Would I recommend it ........ if you live in Alaska and love the history of this great state and its people then this book is absolutely for you.
