Three Greta Garbo films from the silent era are collected here. FLESH AND THE DEVIL: Greta Garbo and John Gilbert star in this classic silent melodrama about a love triangle between two boyhood friends and the amoral seductress who comes between them. Best friends Leo (Gilbert) and Ulrich (Lars Hanson) are cadets at a military academy when Leo falls madly in love with the gorgeous and aristocratic Countess Felicitas von Kletzingk (Garbo). However, Felicitas neglects to tell him that she has a husband who, upon discovering the affair, challenges Leo to a duel. Leo kills von Kletzingk and is sentenced to five years of foreign service in Africa. Felicitas promises to wait for her brave young lover, and Leo asks Ulrich to look after the grieving widow until his return. After three years, Leo returns to discover that his bosom buddy has married Felicitas in his absence. She rekindles her illicit romance with Leo but refuses to give up the comforts of married life with the now wealthy Ulrich. Determined to have them both, Felicitas drives the former friends into a deadly rivalry that culminates in a beautifully filmed finale that director Clarence Brown shoots almost entirely in silhouette. The use of inclement weather to invoke tragedy and mystery in the film contributes to the silent beauty of this MGM classic. Greta Garbo gives an incendiary performance as the smoldering femme fatale; she and John Gilbert supposedly began their torrid real-life affair while filming this movie. FLESH AND THE DEVIL, based on the novel THE UNDYING PAST by Hermann Sudermann, is a film that should not be missed.THE MYSTERIOUS LADY: Garbo plays a cunning spy in this silent film from director Fred Niblo. Shot in 1928, MYSTERIOUS LADY sees Garbo playing Tania Fedorova, a wily seductress who both falls in love with and steals documents from a high ranking military man. THE TEMPTRESS: Elena, the Marquess of Torre Blanca (Garbo) finds herself the object of many men's affections in this appropriately titled film. It even leads to two of her suitors engaging in a protracted whip fight, which is surprisingly vicious for a film shot in 1926. A classic from the silent era, Garbo is masterful as the beautiful femme fatale.

    Nice collection of early Garbo silent pictures with good sound and crisp picture. Must be an authentic reproduction since one of the movies has a "color" section, where portions of the movie are a single hue instead of black and white.

    For Greta Garbo fans. chance to see her films after all these years.

    My first views of Garbo silent films, having seen most of her "talkies". Interesting seeing 2 alternative endings for 2 of the films.. given the films were made over 90 years ago, the quality was good, tho the film of The Temptress was more navy-blue and white, than black and white...however,this was fixed by altering the colour setting of my tv.

    Garbo silents collection 2005 Tcm

    Great old movies with good stories , acting , and artistically well directed . Not the best restoration quality, but this is forgivable. I believe most anyone who loves Greta Garbo , or silent cinema, or both , will find this collection worthwhile.
