  • Bell, Book and Candle (Twiight Time Blu-Ray)

My favorite Kim Novak film. She plays an enchanting, extremely self-possessed witch who is somewhat dissatisfied with her life, has unclear yearnings, and decides she wants James Stewart (romantically). Supposedly this film was sort of the inspiration for the television series Bewitched. Everyone gives great performances and the New York neighborhood (The Village?) in the film is believable. I especially like Novak's performance. When she is a witch she is as described above, at the end of the film you can see the change in her personality. I wish she had not changed. Her magic is what gave her her unique personality and tastes. Typical of the fifties; a man falls for a woman and then she has to change her way of being to please him. Why was it that a woman had to lose herself to please a man. The music fits and is at times sensuous. The color of the film is softly, vividly lovely, like a dark impressionist painting. The Twilight Time Blu-Ray release is excellent quality, but I have to say I don't see much difference from the Columbia Classics DVD released in 1999. Highly recommended.
