Product Information

This ambitious nine-hour BBC television mini-series THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII debuted in 1970 to rave reviews, and was eventually broadcast in 70 countries. Tracing the life and loves of the terrible and grandiose monarch, the series follows Henry from his days as an athletic 18-year-old, through his lusty, hotheaded prime, to his final days, bloated and infirm, at 56. Each of the six episodes revolves around one of Henry's many wives: the kind and loving Catherine of Aragon; Anne Boleyn, the dark-haired, tempestuous girl who led Henry to reject Catholicism and create the Anglican Church--and whom he had put to death; Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth; the unattractive Anne of Cleves; the unfaithful Katherine Howard, also sentenced to death; and Katherine Parr, more of a nurse than a wife, who assisted the old king in his final years.Kevin Michell, an unknown Australian actor discovered by Sir Laurence Olivier, played the role of Henry VIII to much acclaim, and Annette Crosbie won kudos for her role as Catherine of Aragon. Filled with drama, fine-acting, lavish costumes and sets, and praised for its historical accuracy, THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII is a triumph of television.

  • Historically accurate and fascinating to watch

Keith Michell is superb as Henry VIII, playing the role of Henry VIII from a young man to his death. He is so believable you feel you are watching the actual Henry VIII. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical movies.

  • Far better than I expected!

I'm NOT a fan of English History but my wife is. We watched this, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Like I said, I'm NOT a fan of English History. I enjoyed the acting skills and the way the story was told. I suggest people of my mindset adopt my technique when watching something they would not watch if not for their partner's presence! Who knows? It may change my mind about English History!

  • Too much power made Henry a bad, bad boy.

Just as great as I remembered! Excellent actors portrayed money-grubbing, power-hungry men while most of the queens employed subtle expressions to show what they were thinking. If Anne Boleyn was accurately depicted, the scheming, greedy little shrew pretty much got what she deserved. I especially found Anne of Cleves interesting .... and smart enough to get out intact! In addition to the great acting, the costumes were beautifully done esp for TV, the sets were appropriately drab, and the effects of power out of control were an excellent portrayal of court life under Henry VIII. Now I'm ready for Elizabeth I. Lopping off heads didn't really deter crime under Henry; I'll see if drawing and quartering worked for Elizabeth!

  • You get what you pay for

This is a set of 6 plays broadcast on PBS back in the the 1970's. The transfer from film/tape to DVD is not great. The disc about his second wife, Anne Boleyn does not play because it gets stuck. I will stick with my VHS version.

  • Classic BBC Production from Masterpiece "early days"

This BBC production is a program I watched with my parents when I was a child, from those early days of Masterpiece Theater. It's an absolute gem. It can be used for pure entertainment (staged dramatization), but also for educational purposes (literature, theater, history, etc.). I'm pleased to have it for my tangible entertainment library.

  • If you love history you will enjoy this

A wonderful BBC production of the life of Henry VIII and his tumultuous reign. Sometimes a bit slow, it is the most complete production on this time period. The only sad thing is that is not available in the better quality Blu - Ray, which, if it were available would be the better purchase.

  • Two minor problems

Sound is very low and there is no closed captioning. If Anne Boylen or Catherine Howard had asked me if they should marry Henry, I would have told them NO!

  • NOT a movie - stage play

I didn't read enough in the description - no one to blame - this is NOT a motion picture / movie. This is theatre stage play. Poor low budget. budget . If you find the cover to be "10" on the scale, so the quality of this dvd on all aspects will be about "2". very disappointed.
