Definitely one for the book shelf, both novice or professional gardener...
At the time of writing this review I haven't completely read this book yet but from what I know and have seen so far, it's certainly one for the collection. The author is a renowned name in the gardening world of books and this certainly comes out in the vast amount of useful information the book contains. My copy was an ex-library book and in good condition. I knew about this book before I purchased it, having seen it at my sisters. The book is packed with useful information about countless flowers and includes details on plant likes and dislikes in terms of soil type, sun & shade, wet or dry habitats, plant heights for positioning in the borders, to name but a few. This is truly a must for anyone with an interest in gardening, from the complete novice to the professional gardener. An exceptional, all embracing gardening book

probably the best book for gardening beginners and really useful to more experienced gardeners
I've owned this book for decades and recently bought a replacement as the original was getting tatty with so much use. The book is superb, covers all the common plants found in British gardens and I used it when I first set up as a plant nurseryman over 30 years ago. It concisely describes each plant, where to plant it,how big it gets and how to propagate it. I still refer to it even after so many years as a nurseryman. Simple, clear, concise, and a wonderful book for those starting off with a garden - or a few tubs, or a window box.
I buy this frequently for friends with no real knowledge of gardening. It takes each plant, in alphabetical order, and says what they need - sun or shade, what type of soil, if they are suitable for dry shade under trees, or marshy ground - i.e. around a natural pond - or if they need full sun, and the months in which they bloom.
