Read the book first, then the movie has more meaning.
I recommend that everyone read the book first prior to watching the movie. The book is much more detailed and you will miss a lot of the meaning of scenes without the background knowledge. The book is a quick read and it helps if you have a little knowledge of the Mexican culture....even if you don't it will make you want to learn. Grande was protrayed as the earth mother a healer and the title fit the character....like all Grande's natural healers and teachers of the earth.
I was introduced to the book during the 70's at NMSU, in Las Cruces Nm, in a Southwest Literature class and carried it through 27 years of teaching in NM.
