Hammett portreys himself
This movie is a fictional representation of Dashiell Hammett's post detective mystery writing life. Hammett's detective characters mirrored his physical and I would say a hoped for ideal version of his personality. The quirks that marked Sam Spade, Nick Charles, et al, are available in this movie, the setting of Chinatown squalor not withstanding. The movie is slow paced and dark, but if you have ever read the 'Thin Man' you will see a connection. Classic film. Well worth a watch.
