Inspired by true events, this gripping and emotional novel describes the tragic fate of a group of wealthy Jewish American businessmen imprisoned in a Polish concentration camp overseen by a particularly sadistic SS official. The prisoners are promised their freedom in an exchange for German POWs, but their repatriation will only occur if they themselves cover the costs of their journey. Knowing that they are being manipulated but desperate to return home, they agree to the terms. It is then when the group's spokesman, Herman Cohen, decides to ransom the life of the young Polish Jew Katerina Horovitzova, who is to be gassed with her entire family. The story serves as both a record of the horrors of war as well as a testament to humankind's capacity for selflessness, and will stay with readers long after the final page has been turned. Inspirada en una historia real, esta novela apasionante y conmovedora describe el destino trágico de un grupo de acaudalados hombres de negocios judeoamericanos, presos en un campo de concentración polaco dirigido por un retorcido oficial de las SS.
