A BOUNTY NEEDING THREE FEET OF SHELF SPACE AND A MAGNIFYING GLASS
The Anchor Bible Dictionary, in six ponderous volumes of small print with minimal b/w images and maps, is now a quarter-century out of date in scholarship, yet used examples command exorbitant prices. A dictionary only in its alphabetical setup, the articles are encyclopedic without the benefit of editing out convoluted sentence structure. The wealth of material in this compendium is sometimes overwhelming, nowhere assisted by succinct, pithy writing.
Very much like the Anchor Bible series itself, some volumes of which are over a half-century old, new volumes to complete the series still appearing from year to year, the scholarship of which varies from outstanding ("the Gospel of John", recently revised to replace Raymond Brown's outstanding original of 50 years ago) to extremely poor (think "Gospel of Mark" in its first appearance).
That said, it is an in-depth, scholarly set that will be welcomed by interfaith professionals and advanced students alike.
