Reviews
When this book first started, I knew it would have some Cree words in it, and the use of the language was what drew me to it. Also, I really like bannock. It looked like it was going to be a Red Riding Hood parody at first, but once the bannock was misplaced it became a story about a little girl who is supported by the new friends around her to problem solve. I think little ones will love how the story comes together at the end. A Cree glossary is included at the end, but if you are reading this out loud to a library group, as I might, you should likely go over this first. This is a really cute story and important to show young readers an Indigenous perspective and contribute to language revitalization of one of many cultures throughout North America., The writing and illustrations work very well together, making the book both enchanting and educational. Reading and learning from this book is one step that anyone...can make to support this work so that Indigenous languages and concepts will continue to be a vital part of the intellectual life in Canada., HighWater Press is one of the leading publishers of #OwnVoices works. Aw'sis and the World-Famous Bannock by Dallas Hunt and Amanda Strong is another fantastic title available from this small but mighty Canadian publisher. In this lovely little story Aw'sis heads into the woods with a basket full of her nôhkom's world-famous bannock for a relative. In her enthusiasm, she accidently drops the bannock into the river. Upset over the lost bannock, she enlists the help of various forest friends to help solve her problem. There is so much to love about this story. A traditional story with familiar animal characters, all lending a hand to help solve a problem. Dallas Hunt, an educator and proponent of language revitalization, weaves a tale and includes Cree language throughout. With a pronunciation guide at the back, be sure to give this one a few read throughs before sharing it out loud if you are unfamiliar with the Cree language. It's so vital to have books in dual language to help revitalize First languages. We had a ton of fun learning the different names in Cree for the different animals and ingredients in the story. Best of all, there is a recipe for Kôhkum's World-Famous Bannock at the end so after reading you can have a baking session with your little ones! The illustrations by Amanda Strong are so fantastic. From the cute end papers featuring all of the ingredients for bannock, to the lively little forest friends, the illustrations really bring the story to life. Try to find the bear on all of the pages, makes for a great little interactive cuddle up story as well as a great read aloud., Aw'sis and the World-Famous Bannock is another sweet and charming picture book coming from HighWater Press, one of my personal favourite publishers. I believe that this is Dallas Hunt's first book, but after reading this I would certainly read anything he put out in the future. I would also be willing to read anything illustrated by Amanda Strong, as her work here is lovely. The story here is a unique interpretation of the "Red Riding Hood" fairy tale, with Aw'sis losing bannock that she tries to replace with the help of animal friends, only to find herself collecting replacement ingredients instead. The story is sweet, but the language aspects here really shine, with Cree words and phrases being used on every page, many of them being identifiable by context or by the accompanying illustrations. The words and phrases have a translation and pronunciation guide in the back, which is extremely helpful for anyone unfamiliar or unfluent in the language. I thought the recipe included was a nice touch, and it appears to be easy to follow. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a solid Red Riding Hood retelling for kids, and to anyone (child or adult) interested in learning Cree or practicing Cree language skills. It is also simply a colourful and sweet story for anyone looking for a story to read with children in need of a good book., Aw'sis and the World-Famous Bannock tells the story of a young Cree girl, Aw'sis. When Aw'sis loses her kôhkum's (Cree word for "grandmother") freshly-baked pahkwêsikan, or bannock -- a type of fry bread -- she was supposed to deliver to a relative, she is faced with the task of finding fresh pahkwêsikan. Thrown into an adventure, she seeks the help of animal relatives -- including sîsîp ("duck"), w'pos ("rabbit") and maskwa ("bear") -- all of which she meets along the way. The story was based on an experience Hunt had on a trip from Vancouver to Edmonton. Hunt and his then-partner came across a sign in the Shuswap area that read "Bannock," but after searching, neither could find the place advertised. "We tried to find it and we couldn't find it anywhere," he said. "We must have drove around for 25, 30 minutes and never found it." "It was a lot of fun when we were trying to find it, it got ridiculous [...] and so I was like 'Well, that might be a kid's book one day,' and sure enough." The book includes a pronunciation guide for the Cree words used in the book and a bannock recipe. "It teaches and that's one of the primary functions, I think," Hunt said. "It's targeted toward young kids and it's really to naturalize or normalize the Cree language at a very early age." Hunt said the story, and the educational content within it, was written for children from all walks of life. "It's for Cree children specifically [and] other Indigenous children," he said. "But I also think that there are other ideas in the text that I think will be applicable to non-Indigenous children as well.", #9733 "In children's storytelling, length, image, and readability matters, especially in books like this one that challenge readers to use Cree language. Hunt and Strong strike a balance in this regard. The writing and illustrations work very well together, making the book both enchanting and educational.", Starred Review Aw 'sis and the World-Famous Bannock tells the story a little girl who accidentally lost her Kôhkum''s world-famous bannock while walking through the forest. Sîsîp hears her crying and quacks, "What''s the matter?" After learning about the lost bannock, the duck offers Aw'sis some tohtosapopimehkan (margarine), one of the ingredients of Kôhkum''s world-famous bannock. As Aw'sis continues on her walk through the forest she meets several other animals, and each gives her a different ingredient for bannock until Aw'sis she has almost everything she needs to make the bread. This is the debut book by Dallas Hunt, a teacher, writer, proponent of Indigenous language revitalization, and member of Wapisewsipi (Swan River First Nation) in Treaty 8 territory in Northern Alberta, Canada; and it''s illustrated by Amanda Strong, who is a Michif filmmaker, media artist, and stop-motion director. In children''s storytelling, length, image, and readability matters, especially in books like this one that challenge readers to use Cree language. Hunt and Strong strike a balance in this regard. The writing and illustrations work very well together, making the book both enchanting and educational. As an Indigenous language learner, I appreciate the use of Cree words in contexts where their meaning was clear to a non-Cree speaker. Hunt doesn''t use an English translation in the text, but rather the reader knows "Sîsîp" is a duck because he quacks and through the accompanying illustration of the animal. This association without the intermediate translation is an important process when learning a new language. That said, there is a list of words, their translation and pronunciation at the back of the book. And HighWater Press has made a pronunciation guide that is available on YouTube and the publisher''s website. Aw 'sis and the World-Famous Bannock suits audiences who don''t know any Cree words as well as those who are learning the language. The picture book is particularly valuable because it teaches words from common everyday contexts - animals in the forest and ingredients in a kitchen. When Aw'sis arrives at her Kôhkum''s house at the end of the story, they begin to make the world-famous bannock to share with Aw'sis''s new friends. Kôhkum''s recipe, with ingredients in English and Cree, can be found at the end of the story. My five year-old daughter was able to follow the steps, which brought all of the ingredients into one bowl to be mixed into a lovely soft dough. She then shared it with her friends - and her Kôhkum. The United Nations has proclaimed 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages in an effort to raise awareness about Indigenous language endangerment and to support efforts like those of Hunt and Strong to revitalize, preserve, and maintain Indigenous languages through knowledge-sharing and integrating Indigenous languages into standard settings. The 2016 census documented 354, 665 Cree people in Canada, and 96, 575 people who speak the Cree language. While it has several dialects, taken together as one language, Cree languages constitute the most widely-spoken Indigenous languages in Canada. Even so, the language is endangered, and as University of Winnipeg Indigenous Studies professor Dr. Lorena Fontaine told the CBC in 2016, "unless we do something in this generation - the generation of my daughter - the languages will die." In one small way, reading and learning from this book is one step that anyone in Canada can make to support this work so that Indigenous languages and concepts will continue to be a vital part of the intellectual life in Canada. Mary Jane Logan McCallum is a professor of history at the University of Winnipeg and the author of Structures of Indifference: An Indigenous Life and Death in a Canadian City . She is Lunaape heritage and a member of the Munsee Delaware Nation., Kait (4) liked guessing which ingredient each animal was giving and she loved making the bannock at the end. She also related to spilling things because of running along. I enjoyed learning to pronounce all the new words as I read to her. The illustrations are really cute., What looks like it might be a take on Little Red Riding Hood, turns into a story of losing Bannock in the woods, and being helped to find all the ingredients by the local wildlife, so that although she can't find what was lost, she can make more of it. Cree words are sprinkled throughout, but used in context, and with the pictures, you can figure out that sisip is a duck and that siwinikan is sugar. And at the back of the book is a Cree to English translation as well as pronunciation guide. Representation is important, and language dies if it is not used. This is a great way to bring the Cree language into everyday stories. One of the things I love about Cree, and this is mentioned in the back of the book is that Kohkum, which is used for grandmother, literally means "your grandmother". But it is commonly used to be just grandmother, so because that is the common usage that is how it is used here to. Languages grow with usage, and change with time. And, we get a recipe for Bannock to boot. A good addition to libraries and schools. Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review., Catchy and delightful, Aw'sis and the World-Famous Bannock has a strong plot that propels readers along at a brisk and exciting pace. Cree words are utilized throughout the story. The illustrations consist of muted greens and purples, emulating the dark forest in which much of the plot takes place. Character expressions, especially those of the animals, add delight and intrigue. The book includes the famous bannock recipe and a Cree dictionary. Aw'sis and the World-Famous Bannock is a must-have for all Canadian children's collections. https://www.cmreviews.ca/node/554, Catchy and delightful, Aw'sis and the World-Famous Bannock has a strong plot that propels readers along at a brisk and exciting pace... Aw'sis and the World-Famous Bannock is a must-have for all Canadian children's collections. Highly Recommended., This was just the loveliest little book about being a good helper and about family love. My Cree kiddos loved the Cree in the book, and the bannock was superb!!! I will buy this one absolutely., Catchy and delightful, Aw'sis and the World-Famous Bannock has a strong plot that propels readers along at a brisk and exciting pace. Aw'sis and the World-Famous Bannock is a must-have for all Canadian children's collections., In his debut book, Hunt tells a story that already feels like a childhood classic. Young children will enjoy the tale's effective repetition of incident and language..., its cooperative animals, and the happy ending. Strong's charmingly faux naif illustrations, dominated by soft colors of blue, purple, brown, and green, are lovely and expressive..., As a conscientious book lover, one of the first things before requesting this title was to do a search regarding the author to ensure that this is an Own Voices title; it is not only Own Voices written, it is also Own Voices illustrated, and that is one of the top reasons I believe that this book would make a great addition to any collection, and I strongly encourage my Canadian colleagues to purchase this book. This is the story of a young child who is sent by her grandmother to deliver a basket of goodies to a relative; however, on her way there, due to her playfulness and enjoyment of being in the forest, she looses the bannock in the river. However, an array of forest friends are there to lend her ingredients to make her grandmother's world-famous bannock. But will she be able to make it on her own? The book is written in Cree and English; while there are no direct translations within the texts regarding the English translation of the Cree words, there are many visual cues. For example, maskwa is the Cree word for 'bear', and it is used only adjacent to a page with the bear bringing an ingredient for bannock. The author makes a note in the translation and pronunciation guide in the back that this book is written as a fun way to revitalize the Cree language, designed perfectly for those who already know the Cree language and for those who are new to learning the language. In addition, the illustrations are beautifully done, and I hope to see more works as a partnership between Mr. Hunt and Ms. Strong in the future., Hunt skillfully integrates Cree words into his tale about a Cree girl, her grandmother and the animals who help her. In the author's note, he also mentions that the story celebrates traditional indigenous storytelling methods and readers will notice the strong structure of the story and the way it reads aloud beautifully... A marvelous picture book celebrating the Cree language, storytelling and food. Appropriate for ages 2-4., I'm going to shout about this book to friends and colleagues in children's literature. Published in 2018 by Highwater Press, Aw'sis and the World Famous Bannock by Dallas Hunt and Amanda Strong is highly recommended!, What a wonderful story. I think it'll take a while to get the pronunciation right but it was a really nice tale. Definitely one I would purchase and hopefully there would be more in the series. I think it's incredibly important for children to learn other languages., In his debut book, Hunt tells a story that already feels like a childhood classic. Young children will enjoy the tale's effective repetition of incident and language..., its cooperative animals, and the happy ending. Strong's charmingly faux naif illustrations, dominated by soft colors of blue, purple, brown, and green, are lovely and expressive, An absolutely precious children's book using cree language words for items and animals. Not only does it teach and encourage use of a traditional language, it shares a bannock recipe at the end...

- 0***1 (1572)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufThis book arrived within the time period given and was in the 'very good' condition described. Unfortunately, only being packaged in a plastic bag to traverse the Atlantic meant that all four corners got a battering (I would be happy to pay bit more in future for a bit of cardboard support in packaging) but all in all, the price was good and overall service for books that are difficult to get over here, I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this seller. Will buy again from them.
