Today's mountain travelers can ignore these historic lessons only at their own peril. (Praise for the First Edition of Not Without Peril)

  • Packed with humanity and the severest weather in the world, this is an armchair adventurers delight

I grew up in New Hampshire and lived in Mt Washington Valley for a few years. I am a Lover of the White Mountains, and though I hiked a few of the smaller hills, I was never hardy enough to venture onto the Presidentials. This book makes me think that my ounce of caution was a wise choice. The Presidential Range has some of the severest and most unpredictable weather in the world (fastest wind speed ever recorded on the planet), and this book tells the harrowing tales of those who dared to tackle 'The Rock Pile" with a healthy dose of history and a sympathetic heart. It is filled with tasty details of the geography of the touraine and vivid descriptions of the weather that make you snuggle in a little tighter to your jammies. Howe is an excellent story teller and his love of this mountain range is evident in the way he writes about the people, the history, the weather, the land itself and the equipment and clothing of the hikers. All of the characters come to life in these well researched and presented tales. I'm nearing the end of the book and as with all the best reads, I will be sorry to turn the last page. Guess I'll just have to read it again :)
