Reviews"The book captures the atmosphere of battles [and] depicts the battle environments around the world from the Italian Wars of the early 16th century through the conflicts of the standing armies at the end of the 17th century. It covers from the massed pike formation on the open battlefield, to the mixed formations of pike and shot, up to the adoption of the socket bayonet; which made the pikeman just about obsolete." - www.mataka.org (November 2010) "This is one of the rare cases where I feel a wargaming book was priced too low." -Chris Deboe, Laserlight "...offers a fine set of wargaming rules for Renaissance tabletop gaming and is designed to both teach principles and allow players to focus on battlefield tactics and deployments." - The Midwest Book Review, "The book captures the atmosphere of battles [and] depicts the battle environments around the world from the Italian Wars of the early 16th century through the conflicts of the standing armies at the end of the 17th century. SynopsisFollowing on from the success of the Field of Glory ancient and medieval rules, Slitherine and Osprey are proud to present this new rulebook for a whole new era of wargaming. Field of Glory- Renaissance takes a fresh look at the weapons and tactics that dominated the battlefields of the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries, and presents a brand-new system that captures the flavour of this colourful period while remaining familiar to current Field of Glory players. Completely independent of the early books, Field of Glory- Renaissance has been designed in an approachable and easy-to-learn manner that allows players to employ on realistic formations and battlefield tactics of the early modern era., Field of Glory: Renaissance is designed in an approachable and easy to learn manner to allow players to concentrate on realistic deployments and battlefield tactics of the early modern era. The book captures the atmosphere of battles, ranging from the Italian Wars of the early sixteenth century through the conflicts of the standing armies of the end of the seventeenth century, not only in Europe but around the world. This period witnessed the dominance of massed pike formations on the open battlefield at the outset giving way to mixed formations of pike and shot until the widespread adoption of the socket bayonet made the pikeman virtually obsolete. After its near demise in western Europe in the late medieval ages, cavalry once again became a powerful force in battle and the introduction of the pistol led to the adoption and evolution of new tactics. Military thinkers of the time were much influenced by classical writers whose rediscovery led to an unprecedented period of experimentation in the practice of warfare. Gunpowder weapons only gradually achieved the supremacy acquired by the end of this period. The rulebook maintains the same production values as previous Field of Glory releases and is designed both to explain the game and be a reference guide when playing. To make the rules easier to follow, it includes examples, detailed descriptions and explanations of unusual situations.
