Product Information

The Master System's answer to The Legend of Zelda, Golvellius: Valley of Doom has richer graphics and similar gameplay but is not as beloved or as well known as the NES classic. Players control a sword-wielding, shield-toting knight on a quest to save the daughter of the good King Alied. The evil king, Golvellius, is terrorizing the valley (all seven sections of it) with his army of mutated bees, spiders, frogs and other hideous beings, and it is up to the brave knight to save the day. Killing enemies rewards the player with gold, which can be used for purchasing weapons, equipment upgrades, tips and other useful items. Thankfully, unlike many previous Master System games, Golvellius has a password feature for saving your progress through the long and involved adventure quest.

This is a game that I had owned and at some point lost over time (thirty years can do that sometimes). And to be completely honest, I'd forgotten all about this game until I saw a review of Sega Master System games on the "Gamesack" YouTube channel. It plays very similar to the original Zelda with the overhead graphics and "dungeon Crawling" scenarios. I would even dare to say with slightly better game play as it includes a side-scrolling aspect. Basically, you're playing as Kelesis, the hero, trying to save the princess from the demon Golvellius. Before you go storming his cave, you must find all the hidden crystals by defeating hidden bosses. Nearly every over-head screen (182 in all) contain a hidden cave that will either open after killing a set number of baddies, or by hitting different object (rocks, trees, grave stones, etc...) The biggest downside to this game is the lack of a save feature for such a large game (for it's time). However there is a password feature, but it's 32 characters long. Golvellius is also a tedious game that forces you to kill lots of baddies in order to get money, but you can only hold so much (until you level up buy purchasing bibles). So, there is a lot of grinding away at killing to buy stuff. And if you die, you start at the very first screen. Again, very similar to Zelda, so get used to seeing that first cave entrance. All-in-all, this is a great game and worth owing if you have a Sega Master System.
