Product Information

The film title is the name of a nightclub run by a pair of homosexuals, one of whom has a son who wants to marry the daughter of a high official. His parents--gay nightclub owner Renato and effeminate transvestite Zaza--must meet his pompous and conservative in-laws. For the sake of their son, the gay couple decide not only to act straight, but to pose as husband and wife! On the night of the party however, insanity reigns when "mom" and "dad" fail to adhere to the "straight" and narrow. This French art house smash was remade in the U.S. as THE BIRDCAGE. Academy Award Nominations: Best Director, Best (Adapted) Screenplay, Best Costume Design.

Charming film, terrific performances
This vintage French film still entertains. The two leads give memorable and touching performances. I saw it multiple times when it was first released in this country and still enjoy spending an evening with Renato and Albin.

Still Funny After All These Years
Ok so it has subtitles but this is still a wicked funny movie. Campy is an understatement. I saw this a long time ago and forgot how much I laughed! Other versions are good but the original is still the best.

Great title
I loved it! It was the very first subtitled movie that I watched when I was younger and I knew if I had the chance I was gonna get it. I'm glad I did.

Hilarious - Outrageous - Fun to Watch
One of my favorite movies of all time. Although in French, the subtitles are easy to read and translate fairly accurately.

An Important Film
An important film in some respects for its time but the characters are stereotyped as some people believe gay men to act which is far from the truth. The intent is comedy of course but I laughed very little.
