Good General Survey of the Axis Air Campaigns
An excellent short history of the Axis attempts to deal with Great Britain’s Mediterranean Fleet base at Malta without confronting it directly. Especially good in uncovering the difficulties faced by the Regia Aeronautica Italiana (RAI) from aero engines to airframes, logistics, ordnance, and doctrine. The text does a solid job of explaining the reasons the RAI had so little success in its operations, and the Deutsches Luftwaffe (Luftwaffe) comparatively better. The superior organisation, doctrinal development, aircraft and ordnance technology, and manufacturing sophistication, enjoyed by the Luftwaffe and denied the RAI, are spelled out clearly. Of course, so is the RAI’s growing appreciation of Malta as a strategically vital objective, and the overall Italian appreciation for the ... Of course, so is the RAI’s growing appreciation of Malta as a strategically vital objective, and the overall Italian appreciation for the importance of eliminating Malta by occupation, rather than by an air campaign beyond the RAI’s capabilities. Here the German high command fails to grasp the nettle, and cannot—-or will not—-see that air suppression of Malta can only be maintained by air power on the order of a Luftflotte, which neither Germany generally nor the Luftwaffe specifically can sustain for the indefinite duration of the Mediterranean and Western Desert campaigns. The role of the British Royal Air Force (RAF), the Royal Army’s Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AA), and the Air Branch of the Royal Navy (ABRN)—-better known by its interwar RAF, and post-war RN, name, the Fleet Air Arm (FAA)—-in combating the Axis campaign gets the brusque, mostly-statistical treatment “the other side” usually gets in war histories, which suits the series narrow-focus narrative structure quite well. The only flaw I felt marred the booklet was the lack of quality graphics; tables might have been better as comparative charts, and static drawings of generic airplane circuses would have been better replaced with small but excellent top view drawings of the main aircraft, perhaps showing the formations in smaller, simpler, less cluttered artwork. The OBs were also poorly organised and layed out, though the inclusion of Commanding Officers was a superior point. The photos were plentiful and good, and the artwork was beautiful, if not particularly helpful or illuminating, which can be fairly typical for many booklets of this sort, unfortunately. I enjoyed the booklet, and learned some details about the RAI’s specific woes that I found enlightening. I recommend it for any history buff, but especially for any gaming enthusiast or war gamer.
