When famous opera star Alice Alquist is murdered, Gregory Anton (Boyer), who hopes to steal the rare jewels the star has hidden, manages to court and marry the singer's niece, beautiful but naive Paula (Ingrid Bergman). His plan is to slowly drive his young wife insane so he can have free reign of the house that hides the precious jewels; however, a Scotland Yard detective takes a close interest in the couple. Under Cukor's tutelage, Angela Lansbury (of television's MURDER, SHE WROTE) made her debut as a flirtatious maid in a role that jump-started her career and landed her an Academy Award nomination at the tender age of 18. GASLIGHT is a classic, compelling film that is masterfully acted and directed.

    Smart Classic

    This is a great DVD. It contains both versions (the British original and American remake) of this famous movie. What can one say about such a classic which hasn't been said a thousand times? The acting is so good, it makes most of today's movies look childish.

    How To Drive Your Wife Mad And Steal Her Diamonds ---- NOT

    "Gaslight" is a tense, psychological thriller. Beautiful Ingrid Bergman has a husband with a terrible secret. It's all about a stash of fabulous diamonds that have been cleverly hidden. The husband, Charles Boyer plays mind games with the wife, trying to drive her mad. It almost works but fate stands in his way. It's a well made film with top-notch acting, great story and tight direction. It's a genuine classic and well deserves its 5 star rating.

    Classic with high current relevance

    Based on a play, and a British version had been filmed just 4 years before it (included on back of disc). This version is worthy of seveal viewings. Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman are powerful actors and finessed the nature of this relationship perfectly. It's a story in the headlines constantly of toxic relationships and our abiity to ignore red flags. This version of the movie is where the current term "gaslighting" someone came from. We've all been gaslighted both personally and in the mass media, so watching this film helps raise awareness. The reason for gaslighting someone may vary, but the technique is the same. It's subtle, consistent chipping away at someone's self esteem. Include frequent endearing outpours of how much they mean to you to keep them dependent, all the while ...

    Gaslight DVD lets you know that Gaslight is when someone tries to convince you other than the truth and you start to question your own truth..

    I really like the movie in that it taught you to be weary of people. When you believe something to be true and your spouse or so called friends try to fool you be sure to check with other people. There is a good lesson to learn about life at another time period.

    A captivating movie.

    I was surprised it is a two-sided DVD, with the 1940 version on one side and the 1944 version on the flip side. I thought it was just the 1944 version I ordered, so was pleased to get 2 in 1.
