Actress Emma Thompson both wrote and stars in this adaptation of Jane Austen's SENSE AND SENSIBILITY--a novel that perceptively examines the social manners and laws of early-19th-century Britain. Set in the English countryside, the film follows the loves and heartaches of sisters Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne Dashwood (Kate Winslet). The two have extremely divergent approaches to life: Elinor represents "sense" and believes in behaving with propriety and thoughtfulness, while Marianne represents "sensibility" and basks in her own emotions. Both women, however, experience confusion when their lovers, seemingly on the verge of proposing marriage, spurn them. For director Ang Lee, the film marks a break from his Father Knows Best trilogy, which examined the problems of the contemporary Taiwanese family. Many people questioned whether an Asian director could handle an English period film. Lee answered those questions with a gorgeous film that both captures the nuances of Austen's novel and proves that Lee is a first-rate director capable of tackling any material. Featuring Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman, among others, the stellar cast inspired Lee to flatteringly exclaim, "Can everyone in England act?"

A true classic movie. A great addition to my collection to watch over and over again.
After going on a Jane Austen binge a few years ago I read everything she had published I fell in love with her novels and have always liked the movies made from her books. This movie is a great example. It arrived in great condition and on time.

Well Worth Watching
Films of this genre are not usually of interest to me. I first found this film as a VHS tape super cheap at a yard sale. Because several of the actors involved were actors I'd enjoyed in other movies, I thought I'd pick it up to check out, not expecting I'd enjoy it all that much. To my surprise, this version of Sense & Sensibility was very nicely done. All the characters were well developed & well acted, and the story was told without a hint of melodrama- good storytelling with solid performances. I enjoyed it enough that I decided I'd add it to my dvd movie collection.

Beautiful Adaptation
This is one of my all-time favorite Jane Austen film adaptations. Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon is perfection. The casting is so good, and there's so much feeling and wit in the script. I really believe that Jane Austen would wholeheartedly approve of this movie.

Excellent production of Jane Austin classic
Excellent Jane Austin movie. Picture quality, acting & setting are superb. Serious & humorous plot well balanced. Attention holding even after watching it 3 times within 2 weeks!

Fantastic film.
This film is an extraordinary adaptation of one of the finest works of modern fiction. The acting is tremendous and Emma Thompson's Oscar winning adapted screenplay sets the mood, tone and structure for one of the finest films of all time.

best adaptation of the novel
This is the best adaptation of the novel. Emma Thompson won an award for the screen play and is great in the movie. Best cast ever. Alan Rickman will steal your heart.

Love this movie!
I love this movie and needed a copy for my small library. The dvd arrived in new condition with no wear at all. I'm so happy to have this in my collection!

Austin but not
I've read the book but the actors in this make the movie better than the book, and it's nice seeing the late Rickman as a good guy. Engaging, emotional, beautifully done and very much worth seeing!!
