SynopsisThe first book in Iain M. Banks's seminal science fiction series, The Culture. Consider Phlebas introduces readers to the utopian conglomeration of human and alien races that explores the nature of war, morality, and the limitless bounds of mankind's imagination. The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it. It was the fate of Horza, the Changer, and his motley crew of unpredictable mercenaries, human and machine, actually to find it, and with it their own destruction., The first book in Iain M. • Reading this book may cause YOUR mind to degrade!

The glaciers that slid down from the north thousands of years ago moved faster than the plot of this book. Tons of needless detail. Unnecessary and boring plot diversions. Eventually, I couldn't care less that a multi ton crystal mind could handle upper level math to the umpteenth decimal point. Needless graphic images. We get it. The organics are a bunch of pervs. Too many characters to easily keep track of. Muddled plot line. Reached the point where I couldn't care less about the mind trapped in a cave somewhere in outer space and the characters trying to locate said mind tossed the book aside. Waste of money. Waste of time. Waste of energy to even turn the pages. Other than these few things, a great read.

  • Read it…and all his other Culture books.

Any SF book by Banks is in the top of the top category of this genre. I’m always surprised by his monumentally expansive creativity.
