Best to buy to complete collections
A long time ago I started buying the Chan movies starting with Warner Oland. Then I continued with the Sidney Toler versions and now Roland Winters. There is a marked fall off in quality, and a reliance on comic relief that is totally offensive in our day and age. Yes, you had Stephen Fetchit in a very early Oland film, but by the time of Mantan Moreland and Willie Best you had blackface comedy performed by real blacks. Then, again, the sons of Chan seem to grow more stupid and incompetent as the series went on. Early on, Lee Chan (Keye Luke) was an Olympic athlete (suspension of belief!), later we was just another stooge. Meanwhile, the Chan figure seemed to grow fatter, and by the time of Winters he was a Royal Caribbean cruise ship on screen, very stolid, seemingly all knowing, but hard to move in any direction. Anyway, this collection is a good way to complete a collection, but don't expect any great movie mystery in any of these films. These are time wasters, entertaining in a limited way, bu not likely that a brick will be thrown at the TV while watching. So maybe a midnight movie or two or three when you have insomnia?
