Faithful English translation of a classic Japanese anime based accurately on RPGs!
In discussions of movies and TV shows that best capture role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder, this is one of the shows that is mentioned a lot. I've finally found it at a reasonable price and have had a chance to watch it. Those who told me that it is the best adaptation of D&D were right. Each main character in the adventuring party accurately portrays a character class right down to magic users casting spells with spell components and magic words - then needing to rest and study afterwords before they can cast again. Clerics pray to their gods for healing and 'buffing' or enhancing the abilities of their comrades in arms (something you rarely see in fantasy movies - even the ones done by official D&D filmmakers. Warriors fight using actual martial arts skills and tactics. The story is engaging too with some interesting twists on genre tropes. It has moments of fun, but for the most part, takes the story story seriously and is not a farce. There are even both dungeons and dragons in the scenes as well as beautifully rendered locales. Some fine animation in this series. The voice actors who dubbed the dialog into English do an excellent job of matching the mouth movements and other actions that the characters do and they do it with convincing emotion. Dubbing well is not easy to do and most shows translated from languages such as Japanese are often laughable, but not in this show.
