A witty, involving drama set in rural Mississippi, Martin Ritt's second film exudes the peculiar charm of the Deep South. Martin Ritt combined two of William Faulkner's Southern stories into this immensely entertaining drama starring Paul Newman as Ben Quick, a wandering handyman who arrives in Frenchman's Bend, Mississippi where menacing rumors about his past are circulating. The self-made town despot, Will Varner (Welles), quickly warms to the drifter and, seeing a bit of himself in Ben Quick, Varner takes him under his wing and gives him a job at his store. Disappointed with his own son's lazy demeanor, and fearing that his grandchildren will be the same, Varner tells Quick that he'd like him to marry his daughter Clara (Woodward), a tough-minded schoolteacher. Quick and Clara clash at first, and their scenes together project an electricity that practically jumps off the screen, no doubt aided by the stars' offscreen attraction. Their performance, along with sharp dialogue and strong support from the rest of the cast, especially Welles' portrayal of Will Varner, a Southern variation on his Hank Quinlan from A TOUCH OF EVIL, help make THE LONG, HOT SUMMER a classic.

Entertaining and compelling, but a somewhat light weight plot.
Good script, top actors and a classic movie with Paul Newman and wife Joanne Woodward. Orson Welles was also excellent in his role. A refreshing movie with no profanity, or gratuitous sex, but with mild sexual innuendos, as the flicks were in the 1950's. I will watch this one again, down the road.

The Long Hot Summer
My favorite of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. They are fantastic together and not hard to see why they stayed that way till the end. Storyline is wonderful and gives a clear depiction of the times.

great classic
I prefer movies that actually have substance that do not depend on computer graphics in place of a plot and theme of story. If a story can stand up with out the graphics its a great story. The computer graphics are just icing. I loved this story.

Great classic movie
Awesome movie, I hadn't seen it for many years and I loved i then too! I highly recommend the movie. This is how Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward met. Their marriage lasted over 50 years. This is your chance to see the famous "Paul Newman eyes".

Perfect!
A wonderful, steamy summer movie with a gorgeous Paul Newman. What more do you need? They do not make movies this good anymore. Get your best girls and some margaritas and play this movie! If you love old movies, you’ll love it. If you don’t know if you like old movies, you’ll love it more. Not a slow movement in the whole film. Newman and Woodward are magical.

Man was innocently accussed of settling fires to others barns.
It is a Christmas Gift for my sister. I enjoyed watching it with her.
