West Side Story for a New Generation
First of all, it is a Spielberg movie, and you know that he makes not good movies, but great movies!
As I remember seeing West Side Story with Natalie Wood when I was a teenager, I have held that film as a classic (directed by Robert Wise, another great director), it was hard for me to understand why Spielberg felt a need to remake it. It certainly has his touch and there are many things I like about it (all the actors do their own singing). The beginning when the Jets sing "when you're a Jet" is a great start! The dancing is great too. The part of Tony (the Romeo of this Romeo and Juliet plot) is played by Ansel Elgort, probably the only name actor. Richard Beymer played it in the 1960 movie and was considered "bland" Sorry to say the part itself is bland and Elgort doesn't give it any more than Beymer did. But the best part of the movie belongs to the ladies, Maria is played by Rachel Zeglet and Anita (Ariana DeBose) Both are well cast and sing beautifully.
