A great car GPS
I had a Garmin 255W for years and it was time for an upgrade. This DriveSmart 50 is a factory refurbished unit. It came in a new box marked "refurbished", The packaging and the GPS looked as good as brand new. It has been working perfectly. I really enjoy the new features over my old one which still works fine. Garmin makes a good product. Great features and easy to use. Easily exceeds performance of others.
Purchased in lieu of renting a car's GPS for a trip to Costa Rica. It has been performing well for the last year, map updates happen fairly regularly, operation is better than most other brands i've tried (up to triple the price). It lacks a couple of minor features than my 20-year-old Sony (no longer in the GPS business) has, but its traffic alerts, availability of foreign maps and its current maps make it my current winner. It *would* be nice if there was a way to send mapping (especially speed limits) corrects to Garmin's map source. We recently drove on Vancouver Island and Washington's Olympic Peninsula which revealed a number of errors (so keep reading the road signs, folks!). Things it lacks (compared to my 1999 Sony): a built-in Male voice, doesn't say "bear right" if the turn is shallow, a 20-foot earlier "turn NOW" trigger point (but it's far better than TomTom's), an ETA display (without losing some other info).Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Generalüberholt

Good product - nice, clear screen. A little confusing regarding inserting destination addresses (different input schema from my wife's Garmin 50)
Good product … nice clear screen. The destination address schema is a little different than my wife's Garmin LM50 (she has the same model type, just a few years older). Ok for a cheap GPS
It is a basic gps - it seems that every time I replace my Garmin with an update I get less and less features - this one is totally lacking in the features which I like, especially the ability to place a number of info boxes on the screen, such as distance to destination, direction in which I am traveling - the others at least had a compass on the navigation screen which this one is lacking I get my choice of only one info screen, which defaults at time of arrival. now I can touch the bottom of the display and obtain that information and scroll through to find what I want - but then I don't have my route map, so I need to scroll from screen to screen, which is, frankly, dangerous when driving. the only good thing about the device is the voice command, which allows you to voice locate a variety of locations from saved places, give it a complete address, and pull up those places stored in the database - my last one which was the same model was more flexible. It’s reliable and a good guide searching for a place.

Like the ease of use and traffic updates but am disappointed in lack of address updates compared to Tom Tom.

Does it all!
This GPS has all the functions that I find useful on the road. It's a good upgrade from prior Garmin units that I have had. It's easy to use and the voice command option is generally decent to use, there are the usual pronunciation glitches, but nothing horrible. And if there is a glitch it's easy enough to just switch to manually entering the rest of the instruction sequence. The traffic monitoring function is good, on my first use it alerted to a back up ahead on the interstate, gave a good option to detour around the back up and as we got back on the highway we could see the tie up in the rear view mirror. Another nice feature is that it will give you a warning tone and visual alert when you are going into a speed zone (e.g. school zone speed limit) to help keep you out of trouble. The lifetime map update is nice to have so that any new traffic patterns and up to date points of interest (food, fuel, etc) are available. And you can also save some specific searches a "one button" process, for example, I programmed mine to find nearby Starbucks locations, nice to lower the brain function required before you get that first cup of coffee! Best Garmin I've ever purchased!
This is by far hands down the best Garmin I've ever purchased. I'm still learning all the things this unit can do. It can give you real-time weather radar through the Garmin Link app. This is $5 bucks a month, but for driving safety, I think $5 bucks is a small price to pay to see what the weather holds in store up ahead. It's easy to pull the SD CARD and transfer my trips and the data from a day or week of driving to my computer. DO NOT LET THE TERM REFURB STOP YOU from purchasing this unit. It came in a brand new box that was labeled with the words refurb on the box. All the cables we're new it had a screen film to protect the screen and looked brand new when I pulled it out of the box. I have not had any issues with this unit so far! It also makes me want to.drive more just to see everything it can do. My mind was blown when I first used it and realized how accurate down to the tenth of a mile. I highly recommend this item to anyone wanting a new Garmin GPS mobile unit don't waste a thousand dollars for what you can get this unit for. Great product Great Price. Just download and connect the Garmin Smart Link to your GPS and turn it on to get live traffic and as I said before live weather with radar. I guarantee you this is the best purchase you'll make for the price and you'll be perfectly satisfied you made it for a REFURB GPS updated with all the new stuff preloaded you'll pay a thousand dollars for! I give this until 10 stars. ********** (I may do a follow up in a month or so when I've had time to sit down and go through every feature this GPS has. Until then don't let this unit slip away from you. If you're on the fence then if say get off and get the refurb. Garmin was great about adding new cables new features and a new mount for this unit.
