Reviews
The funkiest study of statistical mechanics ever by a world-renowned economist... Eye-opening and sometimes eye-popping, An easy, funny read. Many unsolvable problems the Americans have could be solved with simple means., If Indiana Jones were an economist, he'd be Steven Levitt… Criticizing Freakonomics would be like criticizing a hot fudge sundae., A showcase for Levitt's intriguing explorations into a number of disparate topics.. There's plenty of fun to be had., Levitt dissects complex real-world phenomena, e.g. baby-naming patterns and Sumo wrestling, with an economist's laser., Economics is not widely considered to be one of the sexier sciences.... Steven D. Levitt will change some minds., A showcase for Levitt's intriguing explorations into a number of disparate topics…. There's plenty of fun to be had., Freakonomics is politically incorrect in the best, most essential way.... This is bracing fun of the highest order.

Synopsis
Here's a first-year book that encourages critical thinking and sparks discussion. Freakonomics addresses current social questions that students will enjoy arguing about both in the classroom and over coffee in the student union: - Which is more dangerous--a gun or a swimming? - Why do drug dealers still live with their mothers?- What makes a perfect parent? These may not sound like typical questions an economist asks, but Levitt is not your typical economist. He studies the mysteries of everyday life--from cheating and crime to sports and child rearing--and his conclusions regularly turn conventional wisdom on its head, helping students develop a critical eye to many things that are presented as fact.Freshman Common Read: Appalachian State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Louisville --Philadelphia Daily News, Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner offer the long-awaited paperback edition of Freakonomics , the runaway bestseller, including six Freakonomics columns from the New York Times Magazine and a Q & A with the authors. Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? How much do parents really matter? These may not sound like typical questions for an economist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He studies the riddles of everyday life--from cheating and crime to parenting and sports--and reaches conclusions that turn conventional wisdom on its head. Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They set out to explore the inner workings of a crack gang, the truth about real estate agents, the secrets of the Ku Klux Klan, and much more. Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, they show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives--how people get what they want or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing., Steven D. - _***_ (33)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufIt was indicated that the item is in very good condition. I would give it a good condition rating because the cover was partially damaged from use and a small water stain, but the inside isn't marked and is in pretty good condition. The delivery was earlier which is super.

- v***v (2076)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.
