I don't know how they did it, but well done! used a ball mouse for many years (Logitech) until I wore it out and couldn't find another so went back to normal mouse. I looked again and found this one (Kensington) I am just trying it out, it is very good so far. I am almost used to it in one hour. The ball is very light and precise. The thumb button is in a good ergonomic place, the right button less so, but I recommend
