very strange movie, but well done.
Let's start by saying that I enjoy weird movies. 1950's space monsters, convoluted murder mysteries, badly dubbed Japanese imports, etc. So it is no surprise that I enjoyed Pennies from Heaven. It is a depression-era story of a sheet music salesman and his repressed wife, a lonely schoolteacher, and various characters we meet along the way. The weird part is that the story is advanced by the actors pretending to sing songs of the era. (I also love that type of music.) The attention to detail in period sets, costumes, etc. is fantastic, as are the production numbers. (Christopher Walken's strip tease must be seen to be believed.) There is a murder, and, it being a 30's type musical, there is a happy ending. The acting is superb. (Some critics said Steve Martin was wrong for the lead, but he acquits himself nicely imho), the music is first rate, the dancing is top drawer and the overall effect is surprisingly upbeat for a basically depressing story line. If you enjoy the offbeat and the just plain weird, this movie is for you. HIGHLY recommended.
