  • Great reading even if you never go to Mexico

I've written two longer reviews of this book for earlier editions, so will limit this one to a general observation that this may be the best travel guide ever. The People's Guide is nothing like Frommer's or Fodor's, with no lists of recommended hotels or restaurants, but far more practical for people who really want to experience Mexico and its people, who are the stars. The stories alone make it worth buying...they're just hilarious and you really get a feel for the country far from the resorts and gringo enclaves. I WOULD recommend getting this version because it's the latest and has some good updated info. One cool thing is that while it's 150+ pages longer than the 30th Anniversary edition it's replacing in my library, it takes up less space because the paper is of a lighter stock. I'd strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to experience the "real" Mexico because this'll tell you what to expect, but even if you never go, if you like "Travels with Charley" or "Blue Highways," you'll feel right at home as a reader. Two thumbs up and if I were a mutant, it'd be three or more.
