SynopsisA Booklist Notable Book of 2012 The extraordinary New York Times bestselling account of James Garfield's rise from poverty to the American presidency, and the dramatic history of his assassination and legacy, from bestselling author of The River of Doubt , Candice Millard. James Abram Garfield was one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, a renowned congressman, and a reluctant presidential candidate who took on the nation's corrupt political establishment. But four months after Garfield's inauguration in 1881, he was shot in the back by a deranged office-seeker named Charles Guiteau. Garfield survived the attack, but become the object of bitter, behind-the-scenes struggles for power--over his administration, over the nation's future, and, hauntingly, over his medical care. Meticulously researched, epic in scope, and pulsating with an intimate human focus and high-velocity narrative drive, The Destiny of the Republic brings alive a forgotten chapter of U.S. history., NATIONAL BESTSELLER * The extraordinary account of James Garfield's rise from poverty to the American presidency, and the dramatic history of his assassination and legacy, from the bestselling author of The River of Doubt. • Read this book

I knew nothing about Garfield, but like on her previous book, the author makes for compelling and informative reading that does not read like a dry textbook. Even though I am not usually a history buff, it was well worth my time to read this fascinating book.

  • Fascinating history of politics, medical science, and greatness

This is an interesting and fascinating book that looks into the courage and strength of a President whose life was much too short. It also chronicles the intriguing medical history and emerging inventions of the era to try to save the President and many other lives. Great book.

  • Fascinating Book!

Candice Millard gives a fascinating, extensively researched account of this often overlooked era in presidential history. She brings to life not only president Garfield, but also the madness of his assassin who brought him down and the failure of the medical care he received to preserve his life. Also intertwined in the story is the account of Alexander Graham Bell, his recent invention of the telephone, and his efforts to aid in the treatment of Garfield. Definitely recommend reading.

  • Fascinating

I don't read much non fiction but this is one of my favorities. Recommended it for my book club (which is now not meeting because of the coronoavirus) so I had to buy it again and re-read.
