SynopsisFor the first time, ten years after her abduction from her Salt Lake City bedroom, Elizabeth Smart reveals how she survived and the secret to forging a new life in the wake of a brutal crime, The harrowing true story of abduction and survival from the courageous young woman who lived it--now the subject of a Lifetime original movie, I Am Elizabeth Smart. In this memoir, Elizabeth Smart reveals how she survived and the secret to forging a new life in the wake of a brutal crime. On June 5, 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. Elizabeth was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life. With My Story, Elizabeth tells of the constant fear she endured every hour, her courageous determination to maintain hope, and how she devised a plan to manipulate her captors and convinced them to return to Utah, where she was rescued minutes after arriving. Smart explains how her faith helped her stay sane in the midst of a nightmare and how she found the strength to confront her captors at their trial and see that justice was served. In the years after her rescue, Smart transformed from victim to advocate, traveling the country and working to educate, inspire and foster change. She has created a foundation to help prevent crimes against children and is a frequent public speaker. She and her husband, Matthew Gilmour, now have two children.

I read this book in a few days, never wanting to put it down. I had heard a bit of her story in the news years ago but did not know the details nor how incredibly strong she is. This book is incredible; she has become my new role model for strength, class, and grace.

  • Inspiring and Illuminating🙏🏻

What an amazing human being. Her story is miraculous! So refreshing to still find spiritual, honesty and humble people like her. I really loved Chapter 20. At the end, she says: "In my life, I have come to believe there are lots of examples where God provides us little miracles to give us hope...We may even have to look for His miracles along the way. But they are there. And they are important when we are struggling with the challenging battles of this life." The last chapter was the best. She explains in detail how she was able to over come this trauma in her life. She truly gives hope to all the the children that have been abused. If you are wondering if she gives graphic details of her abuse, sorry, she does not. She doesn't have to. That is not the point of her story!

  • My New Hero!

I thought I knew the Elizabeth Smart story from what I had heard and seen on TV at the time it had happened. I of course felt sorry for her and her family, but I thought that she had become brainwashed and was sympathetic to her kidnapper. WRONG! I did not have a clue what Elizabeth went through. After I read this book, I have nothing but respect for her. This book is very compelling, well written and informative. Obviously it is not a happy story. I feel sadness for her and her family and friends. I feel extreme anger and a desire to retaliate towards her captors! If I had gone through anything like what Elizabeth went through, I would be an angry bitter person. Not her! Her attitude is very warming and constructive. She has done so much to help other victims and their families. She is the kind of person I would like to be. Elizabeth Smart is my new hero! -John Hoxie

  • waste of time and money.

sad that it's true, but needs a better writer. still speaks like a child, and talks to us like we are children too. talks about how god was there for her, but had nothing to do with her captors. I think the book is very naïve, and is ridiculously priced at twenty seven dollars! waste of time and money.
