This book is a MAJOR reality check!
I read it when it first came out in the mid 1970s, when people were complaining about pollution, crime, school problems, unhealthy foods, etc. They longed for the Good Old Days when life was "simpler". This book will give the reader a whole new appreciation for technology, as well as hope for the future!

A sure cure for the dewy-eyed folks who wish for a cozy version of the past!
A sure cure for the dewy-eyed folks who wish for a cozy version of the past! Bettmann draws on his visual sources to abundantly illustrate this book, detailing the foul and dangerous conditions under which most people lived during the 1800s. I recommend this to all who are interestd in late 19th century American history in particluar.

I didn't know that!
Great small articles with loads of history about the late 1800s (generally)and daily life in the USA. Eye opening...fascinating for sure.

Dont read if you dream of the good old times.
Did not know how hard it was to live back then. Glad we live in todays time. They suffered so we can have what we have now.
