Lou Ferrigno, perhaps best known for portraying Bruce Banner's alter-ego in TV's THE INCREDIBLE HULK, dons a period costume for his portrayal of Hercules in these two movies. The first sees the Greek strongman engaging in sword fights and battling to rescue his fiancée while also saving the world--all part of the job for the strongest man in the world! In the sequel, Ferrigno returns to reprise his role, in which he has to defend his own creator, the great God Zeus, who has had his thunderbolts stolen. Magnificent to look at...if ou can ignore the silly storytelling.
Although these films were produced in Italy in the mid-eighties and might seem a little silly and juvenile, they are still quite fun and the color and costuming make up for the occasional sub-par special effects. Director/Writer Louis Coates (Luiggi Cozzi) also created a famous piece, "Starcrash" with Caroline Munro. He doesn't have exorbitant budgets but I believe the man really tries to make fun pictures with a definite Italian style and energy. Some good stay at home night movie set.
The Hercules movies are a mix of the main hero in adventure and fighting along with some Sci-fi type effects and monsters. Some of the monsters and effects are goofy, but it also made it fun for me to watch. Ferrigno is a great pick for both Hercules and Sinbad. Sinbad was good for some of the battles, including with the Chinese soldier of fortune who I think did amazing in the fights. The Hercules double feature is a blast and exactly what I was looking for. Both features have gorgeous colors and the acting by all the characters is over the top.
